Inside Line Promotions – ENUMCLAW, Wash. (March 29, 2017) – Henry Van Dam is kicking off his 2017 season this Friday and Saturday at Central Washington State Fair Raceway with the Summer Thunder Sprint Series.
It will be the first weekend of approximately 25-to-30 races this season for Van Dam, who will pick and choose select shows to compete at along the West Coast throughout the season.
“Having fun is our motto as far as where we’re racing and when we’re going,” he said. “We aren’t going to run for points. We’ll just hit what we want to when we can.”
That begins this weekend at the half-mile oval in Yakima, Wash., where Van Dam scored his first-ever win last September during his most recent visit.
“We had so many second and thirds there,” he said. “We really had to work for it and earn it. We’ve had really great race cars and just didn’t get that finish we wanted. To get that win last year after so many years of trying was awesome. We have a lot of family that supports that event every year so to win with them was great.”
Van Dam’s track record at the big oval is outstanding as he has recorded at least one top 10 per season for the last nine years. In the 21 races during that time, Van Dam has five podiums, eight top fives and 17 top 10s.
“The way I run my cars tends to work on a flatter track,” he said. “I have good car control so it puts us in the ballpark there. If you don’t have corner speed there, with the long straightaways, you lose a lot of speed.”
Van Dam earned a pair of Summer Thunder Sprint Series wins last season, including the one at Central Washington State Fair Raceway.
“We’re really excited to get things rolling again,” he said. “We took the biggest break in quite some years over the winter.
“Each year we gain a little as far as what we know and the direction we want to go. The middle part of last year was really frustrating. It caused us to really go back to work and by the end of the year we were able to see the results. If we can continue to keep working in that direction I think we’ll be really good this year.”
