Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 24, 2019) – A mechanical problem derailed Dominic Scelzi last Saturday when he was in contention for at least a top five and possibly a victory during the final night of the famed Trophy Cup.

It had been an up-and-down type of event for the Roth Motorsports driver, who was running fourth on Saturday when he was sidelined by the problem on Lap 11.

“It was a bummer to end that way, but the car felt good all weekend,” he said. “We just never felt like we could get the speed we were aiming for.”

The three-day event at Thunderbowl Raceway, which featured nearly 90 competitors, began on Thursday with Scelzi qualifying 18th quickest in his group. He placed second in a heat race and rallied from eighth to fourth in the B Main, grabbing the final transfer with a last-lap pass. Scelzi continued to move forward in the main event by charging from 22nd to 11th.

“We had a great rebound on Thursday,” he said. “Any time you can pass the number of cars and the talented drivers we did to nearly get a top 10 in the A Main after being mid-pack in the B Main it’s a good rally.”

The second preliminary night was similar for Scelzi, who timed in 19th quickest in his group. He won a heat race to lock into the A Main. This time he maneuvered from 17th to 12th.

Scelzi’s point total from both preliminary nights was only one point apart. He powered from fifth to third place in a heat race on Saturday to lock himself into the main event, which was inverted based on points.

“We started third and ran inside the top five during the first stage of the race before we had a mechanical problem,” he said. “That ended our Trophy Cup. We didn’t get the results we wanted, but that’s racing and we’re excited to get back at it in a couple weeks.”

Scelzi will take this weekend off before making his final scheduled start of the year with Roth Motorsports on Nov. 2 at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., during the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series season finale. Scelzi enters the race ranked third in the championship standings – only seven points out of the lead.
