Inside Line Promotions – SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (June 22, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi captured his best finish of the season last Sunday at Angell Park Speedway, where he garnered a runner-up result to cap a strong week of competition.
The action began a week ago Tuesday at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., where Scelzi opened the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series show by qualifying 13th quickest during his debut at the high-banked oval. He then placed fifth in a heat race to lock the family owned, Roth Motorsports backed team into the 17th starting position in the main event.
“We moved forward a couple of positions, but a mechanical problem about 10 laps in sidelined us,” he said after being credited with a 20th-place result.
Scelzi ventured to Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on Saturday.
“It sprinkled from hot laps through the main event,” he said. “We had storms all around us. It misted and sprinkled the whole night. The track wasn’t able to clean off. Everyone was running around the top in the feature. One guy crashed and then I passed two other guys when they moved to the bottom. (Danny) Lasoski got me at the end for seventh. It was another strong run at Knoxville.”
Scelzi timed in 10th quickest before he finished third in a heat race. He advanced two positions to post an eighth-place finish in the main event. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/5EchkKh6JXs.
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at Angell Park Speedway, where Scelzi qualified third quickest to kick off the IRA Series event. He advanced to a third-place result in a heat race and started the main event on the outside of the front row.
“We led the first half of the race before we got caught up in traffic,” he said. “(Bill) Balog got by me. I got back to his bumper and was about to go around him when we had a caution with about 12 laps to go. Bill got a great restart and it took me a while to get back to him. With about two laps to go I was trying to set up a pass. There was a lapped car on the outside. I went low to get by both of them. Bill also went low and I had to get on the brakes. That was my last move. We had a car that could have won so it was frustrating to miss that opportunity, but it shows how good of a car Scotty and Brandon have been giving me each night to be in that position to race for a win.”
Scelzi ended second, which marked his third top five of the season. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/XkOGqRYWhWg.
Scelzi is flying home to California to drive for Nick McColloch this Saturday during the Sprint Car Challenge Tour event at Calistoga Speedway in Calistoga, Calif.
