Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (May 31, 2017) – Channin Tankersley produced his second straight podium finish last Friday at RPM Speedway during the first night of the 15th annual Memorial Day Classic tripleheader.
Tankersley, who was driving for Bruce Griffith, won his ASCS Gulf South Region heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That earned enough points to advance into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 1 to start the main event on the pole.
“The track was pretty one groove around the top,” he said. “I got the jump and was being smooth and trying not to make mistakes because the cushion was literally on the wall. I wasn’t feeling pressure the whole race. Then we had three or four cautions in the last five laps. Whenever you have multiple shots at it … they were on it and I wasn’t.”
Tankersley led a majority of the main event before a late-race restart bunched the field up. Ray Allen Kulhanek slid Tankersley for the top spot in turns three and four.
“I think I could have got Ray Allen back, but when I went to turn the car and go beneath him Sam (Hafertepe Jr.) stuck his nose in there and I couldn’t get back underneath them,” he said. “Then we had a caution the next lap so we went single file. It just slipped through the cracks the last few laps. Cautions hurt us, but that’s part of it sometimes. Overall, it was a really solid night. The car was close the whole night.”
Tankersley ended with a third-place result.
The team ventured to Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday.
“It was a really laid back night,” he said. “The track was fast and there wasn’t a lot of passing. We had a good draw for our heat race and finished third and that put us in a decent spot for the A Main. We made up a little ground, lost a little ground, made up a little ground. It was follow the leader the whole race.”
Tankersley, who missed making the feature redraw by only one position and therefore started the main event ninth, battled between seventh and ninth throughout the A Main before posting an eighth-place finish.
“Devil’s Bowl is statistically our worst track,” he said. “We had a pretty decent run there. That’s probably the best I’ve been there in a while.”
Sunday’s weekend finale at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, rained out.
