Burks Wins Third Straight At I-35!

Saturday night at I-35 Speedway in Winston, Missouri Wyatt Burks of (Topeka, Ks) would win his 6th feature of the year racing with the Wholesale Batteries USAC MWRA Sprint Series after grabbing the lead from Zach Clark of (Raymore, Mo) following a second lap restart. And then methodically worked through lapped traffic on his way to a series leading 16th all-time win. Though the path for Burks to victory appeared at times to be easy, the competition behind the winner turned into a fierce battle among the rest of the contenders running for positions second thru tenth.

All of that action however followed the wildest moment of the night when the field barreled down the straightaway to complete the first lap of the feature resulting in a multi car accident that incapacitated the machines of Chad Winfrey of (Gladstone, Mo) and (Independence, Mo) chauffeur Chad Tye. Both Chads were okay after the altercation, but their cars were not as they left on the hook.
Once Burks took the lead for good, a dog fight ensued behind him for second, third, and fourth, with Luke Howard of (Overland Park, Ks) wrestling away second place after passing both third place finisher Clark, and fourth place Chris Parkinson of (Gladstone, Mo) on his way to his best finish so far in 2023.

Behind those drivers, Dakota Earls of (Independence, Mo) would race to 5Th, followed by “Hard Charger” recipient Buddy Parker of (Wichita Falls, Tx) who advanced four positions from tenth to sixth. Which for Parker would pay him 100 dollars from the Midwest Wingless Racing Association, as well as a bonus of a extra 100 dollars from title sponsor Wholesale Batteries, Inc.on his way to a career best finish with the MWRA.

While rounding out the top 10 were A.J. Gilbert of (Tonganoxie, Ks) with a best finish of 2023 coming home seventh. (Newton, Iowas) Ben Woods in eighth, and the Johnson’s (no relation) Justin Johnson (Parkville, Mo) ninth, with Wojo Johnson, in tenth. The finish for “JJ” Justin Johnson was also significant as it was his first top 10 finish with the MWRA and came after he battled very hard with Parker and others in the 25 lap feature. Show Me State racer Tye would also receive the Hard Luck award courtesy of Xtreme Color.

Earlier in the evening Burks would win his sixth heat race with the MWRA in 2023, while Parkinson would take his first heat win with the series this season.
The MWRA’s trip to Northwest Missouri concludes tonight, Sunday, September 3rd at the Northwest Missouri State Fairgrounds in Bethany for night number 3 of this Labor Day weekend triple header.
