TIMMS TALLIES TEN GRAND PAYDAY IN VOLUSIA USCS SOUTHERN SPRINT CAR SHOOTOUT

Saturday, January 27, 2024 - DeLEON SPRINGS, FL –
Ryan Timms of Oklahoma City, OK chose the low road to race to a $10,000 payday on Saturday night in the 30-lap finale of the 2nd Annual Germfree Southern Sprint Car Shootout for the United Sprint Car Series Presented By K&N Filters on Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park driving the Citgard/Mystic Lubricants Special.
The 17-year-old driver started fifth and took the lead from Austin Peck of Monrovia, IN with an inside move coming off the fourth turn on lap 19. Timms then held his inside line after a late-race caution flag necessitated a green, white, checkered finish to hold off Peck and seal the deal.
Thursday night's winner, Sam Hafertepe Jr. of Sunnyvale, TX finished third, and Friday night’s winner Austin McCarl of Altoona, IA came back from an early race spin to take the fourth spot. Danny Dietrich of Gettysburg, PA started 14th and rallied to finish fifth to earn the $100 Hard Charger Award.
“I found the bottom groove early in turns one and two and got by Hafertepe for second, then it worked in three and four to get by Peck to take the lead,” Timms said. “I was pretty frustrated when that late caution flag came out, but I remembered to stay on the bottom after the restart. I’m just super stoked to get this win.”
Sixth through tenth respectively went to Cameron Martin of Ankeny, IA, Davie Franek of Wantage, NJ, Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL, Tyler Clem of St. Petersburg, FL, and Eric Riggins Jr. of Charlotte, NC.
In preliminary action, Danny Sams III of Northport, FL took the $100 Fast Qualifier Award among the 38 entrants with a lap around the ½-mile clay oval in 14.296 seconds. The four eight-lap Heat Races were won by McCarl, Peck, Cameron Martin, and Hafertepe. The two 12-lap Last Chance Showdown Races were won by Lian Martin of Binbrook, ON and Ryan Harrison of Rothwell, NTR.
McCarl took the lead at the start of the race followed by Peck, Hafertepe, Ryan Turner of Dunnville, ON, and Timms. Peck and Hafertepe came from the fourth and eighth starting positions respectively on lap one to race into the top three. Peck was able to sail around the outside of McCarl on lap two to take the lead coming off turn four. Lap three saw Timms pass Turner for fourth.
The first of three caution flags came out on lap four when McCarl spun in turn three while running in the second spot. That sent the third-generation driver to the tail of 26-car field for the restart.
Peck brought the field back to green, and Timms worked the inside to challenge Hafertepe for second, but the high riding Hafertepe was able to hold the position. Hafertepe chased down Peck on lap ten in lapped traffic, and charged under Peck to take the lead coming off the fourth turn. The pass was negated, however, as the caution flag came out for the stalled car of Brandon Grubaugh of Ocala, FL.
On the restart, Timms drove off the inside of turn two to pass Hafertepe for the second spot. At the hallway point on lap 15, Peck held a .694 second lead over Timms, with Hafertepe, Cameron Martin, and Franek following in the top five. McCarl had worked his way back up to the eighth spot.
Timms chipped away at Peck’s lead in the next three laps, and caught the leader in heavy lapped traffic on lap 19. Timms stayed on the bottom of the track coming off turn four to take the lead. By lap 25, Timms enjoyed a 2.668 second lead on Peck, Hafertepe, Cameron Martin, and McCarl, who was now back in the top five. McCarl was around Cameron Martin for fourth on lap 28.
On the last lap, Hafertepe got by Peck for second, and just when Timms looked like he would cruise home to victory, Ryan Roberts of Aurora, NE stalled to bring out the caution flag. A single-file restart for a green, white, checkered finish saw Timms bring the field down for the green followed by Peck, Hafertepe, McCarl, and Cameron Martin.
Timms held on to the low road to take the $10,000 victory with a .266 second margin of victory at the checkered flag over Peck, Hafertepe, McCarl, and Dietrich, who climbed into the top five on the final lap.
