HMS Update - ASCS National Tour @ TIR
Our weekend is wrapped up and we are heading back home from the Tucson International Raceway where we raced the ASCS National Tour opener. On Friday I pulled pill 67, putting me 7th to start the heat race on the rubber down race track. I was able to make my way to 4th over the course of 8 laps and that was good enough to start 15th in the A Feature. After some track prep the surface changed dramatically becoming slick rather than rubber down on the bottom with a cushion on top. Early on I lost ground and fell to about 20th before making some changes to the car and my driving on a red flag. From there I was able to move forward to 13th before I ran out of laps. Had I not given up so much early I might have been able to grab a top 10 but unfortunately I was not. Last night I drew 30 to start 4th in my heat but wasn't able to capitalize on it because I was so tight. I finished 4th and had to start the B main from the pole. In the B the track was still heavy and fast with a little black streak on exit of turn 2 and entry to turn 3. I got the jump and was able to go wire to wire in the B, winning and moving on to the A feature with a much better handling car than in the heat. Starting from 19th in the A on similar track conditions I was able to make a move forward from the get go and passed several cars before an early red flag. I lost a position or two after reverting to the last completed lap but kept moving forward after going back green. The race then went all the way to the finish and I ended up 13th once again. I passed the second most cars of anybody (I passed the most under green flag conditions if I'm not mistaken) and the car was really fast until I started getting a bit free the last 5 laps. It was one of my best runs with the National guys and I felt like we made improvements. Next weekend we move on to Canyon Speedway Park for the Copper Classic with the USAC Cra 410 nonwing sprint cars.
