Championship; Opportunities
The Bernhardt Motorsports Team put a cap on the 2015 racing season on Saturday January 9th as they were crowned champion of the American Canadian Tour for the third time in four years.
Helliwell earned his third title with a worst finish of seventh, finishing in the top-ten in all thirteen events. His 3.2 average finish included four wins, and ten top 5’s; ranking as one of the best in series history.
The championship marks the 14th individual title combined from series, state and local tracks between owner Bruce Bernhardt and Helliwell; since 2008 they have amassed almost 70-victores across the North East region.
2016 will mark the 10th year since Helliwell’s first appearance in a Bernhardt car. When added up the Dover, NH driver can’t believe the numbers.
“I feel like you’re making that up,” laughed Helliwell. “First of all where has ten-years gone… Second, it’s crazy to think that this podunk Team from Pelham, NH has done any of this… I can’t say enough about Bruce and the support he’s had for me and my family. You have to thank all the people that have made it possible. Everyone that takes time out of their lives to help this effort; everyone that has put money in to support this… It’s not just a Team effort it’s their families, my family, Bruce’s family… It takes so much to do this week-in, week out, year after year. I’m thankful and grateful for the support.”
As the saying goes [consistency wins championships] which could easily be the Bernhardt Motorsports Team mantra; one other constant for over a decade has been the support and relationship with Ekeys-4-Cars.
The North Andover, MA electric car key company has adorned the sides of the bright orange 27NH since before Helliwell got behind the wheel in 2007. The Jim Broadhurst Company has helped support the growth of a weekly racer to a now three-time series champion.
With a new season ahead Ekeys-4-Cars will move from a primary sponsor role to an associate; in a concerted effort for Broadhurst to cut back his motorsports involvement moving forward. A discussion that’s been happening with the owner and sponsor for a few years.
“This has been in the works for a while now,” stated Bernhardt. “We started talking in 2014 that he wanted to cut back. It takes so much to keep this thing going each year... Without people like Ekeys[4-Cars] we wouldn’t be here today. You don’t see many longtime sponsors of racing like that...”
The driver echoed his owner’s statement.
“It takes people like Jim to help race at this level,” stated Helliwell. “This is basically a business… you need a long term investment to grow it. Jim’s commitment to this Team has been huge. He’s been our biggest supporter since day one from street stock, to late model, to super late model, even a modified. To have him continue to be a part is great.”
While the familiar logo on the quarter will change location on the car, it opens the door for new opportunities with the Team moving forward.
“As one door starts to close others open,” stated Helliwell. “We have great relationships with our supporters… it shows with the length of time they’ve been involved with us. We look forward to what’s ahead.”
