Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (July 31, 2023) – Trey Starks put himself in position to contend for a second straight Bob’s Burgers & Brew Summer Nationals triumph.

Starks kicked off the Western Sprint Tour event at Skagit Speedway on Friday when he set quick time during qualifying out of the 45 entrants. A run from sixth to second place in a heat race made Starks the high-points driver heading into the A Main. That lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the feature that showcased an inversion of the top 12 in points.

“It started out slow,” he said. “The track was similar both nights, but not as rough on the first night. It was a very demanding race track. There was a decent amount of grip and the cushion was pretty big so you had to be up on the wheel. When we started getting into traffic I started picking up steam. Through the middle part of the race we were passing a decent amount of cars and at the end we were really fast.”

A run from 12th to fourth place locked Starks into the dash on Saturday as the high-points driver.

“We were really happy with how the car was,” he said. “We guessed right with the race track and made some adjustments with how to race the track and it really paid off. I was really happy with our speed on the prelim night and it got us enough points to lock us in on Saturday.”

The top four in preliminary night points were locked into the dash on Saturday and Starks pulled the No. 3 to start the race third. He gained a position to finish second, giving him the outside front row starting spot in the 35-lap feature.

“We got the lead on the start and led about halfway,” he said. “A shock broke around Lap 5. The track was pretty rough so if I entered the corner wrong the front end would bounce bad. When I was out front it was manageable. It was a lot more apparent in dirty air.”

Starks was running second in the closing stage when his night ended early.

“I broke a steering box with about 10 laps to go,” he said. “It’s disappointing. We’ve had some things go against us at the two biggest races of our year at Skagit. We were really fast and knew we had speed. Unfortunately, we just had some bad luck.”

He was credited with a 20th-place result.

Starks will take the next few weekends off before returning to Skagit Speedway on Aug. 26.
