Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (June 22, 2021) – Trey Starks was on a mission during the Fred Brownfield Classic finale Sunday evening at Grays Harbor Raceway.
Starks charged from 15th to a season-best runner-up result to wrap up the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event. It earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars and tied Starks’ career-best ASCS National Tour run.
“I had a plan going into the feature and it was to be a little more aggressive than the night before,” he said. “It was to take some chances and go where the car in front of me wasn’t. We had a great car that could go anywhere on the track. That helped a ton.
“We had a long run from about Lap 1 to Lap 25 with straight green-flag laps. We could run the top, the bottom, the middle. We marched our way through the field. We got a great restart with five laps to go and got into second. I didn’t have enough time to chase J.J. (Hickle) down. He was really good in clean air. I was running a different spot on the track than he was. If we had a restart with a couple of laps to go we might have been able to challenge for the lead, but in open track I had used my tires up to get up there so we didn’t have a lot left. We were really happy with our finish.”
Starks was also on the move during the heat race as he advanced from ninth to fifth place. That was good enough to secure the second-to-last lock-in position into the main event.
“We pulled a really high pill to start the heat race, but we picked up a handful of spots to lock into the main event,” he said. “It didn’t put us in a great spot, but we had a great car.”
The stout night came on the heels of a frustrating finish on Saturday. Starks placed third in a heat race and won a B Main before a DNF relegated him to a 20th-place result in the A Main.
“Saturday was tough,” he said. “There was just a little bit missing the whole night. We didn’t get a good heat race start and fell back to third. We ran there the rest of the race. That didn’t give us very many points and we had to run a B Main. We had a good car in open track. Then in the feature we started 18th and it seemed like we didn’t make the right decisions. There was some carnage going on in the back of the field. Every time I’d change my line to avoid something we’d lose a couple of spots. As we finally got going we had a car spin out in front of us. We tagged them and flattened the right rear. We didn’t have enough time in the work area to get everything changed.”
Next up is the famed Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup this Thursday through Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash. Starks has finished in the top 10 during three visits to the track this season in preparation for the ASCS National Tour event. His most recent start yielded a third-place result.
“We’ve been really fast at Skagit all year,” he said. “We just haven’t been able to put it together. I’ve made some mistakes and things haven’t gone our way. I really hope this is the weekend it all comes together. It’s easy to say because it’s what you think should happen, but if we’re on top of our game and things go our way I think we’re in a good spot to end up with a victory or two this weekend.”
