Starks Falls Behind Eight Ball During Qualifying at Trophy Cup

Inside Line Promotions - TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 21, 2013) - Trey Starks ended his season with a tough result last weekend at the 20th annual Trophy Cup.

Starks was doomed by a late draw for qualifying on the rapidly diminishing Thunderbowl Raceway to kick off the doubleheader on Friday. He put down the 58 th quickest lap in qualifying, which sent him to a nonqualifier race.

"It's all about qualifying and you've got to get it done in qualifying or the rest of the weekend was going to be tough and it was," he said. "I didn't put down the best qualifying lap that I could have, but the track was over a second off the pace by the time we got to the track. It's surprising that they let the track get that far out. It sucks that we got a bad draw and I let it dictate my weekend. I didn't exactly make the most out of the situation."

Starks won the nonqualifier to advance to the C Main, which he started on the outside of the eight row. He advanced from 16th to eighth, but finished two positions out of earning a transfer to the B Main.

"The car was good," he said. "With a 12-lap race we didn't have enough time. We raced a little bit too much with some cars. We just needed a couple more laps to get those last couple of cars. That's what happens when you put yourself in the back of a C Main."

Based on points from the opening night, Starks narrowly missed a spot in a heat race on Saturday. He then finished second in a D Main to transfer to the C Main, which he started 10th.

"I lost power steering on the warm-up lap," he said. "I was around the top five by the first corner and got up to fourth on the first lap. We had a first caution and we were running fourth. On that restart we were fighting for third and had another caution. On that restart a couple of cars got by me and it was to the point it drained all the fluid out of the system. It got on my steering wheel and my helmet. We had a red flag and I pulled in. It wasn't going to be worth tearing up a car."

That ended both his night and season.

"As disappointed as we are we know we can do better," he said. "We know exactly what we did wrong and exactly what we could have done better. You can use it for motivation for a lot of aspects. It kinda motivates you to do as much as you can in the offseason to make yourself better. I look at it as motivation. I think it's good to have it stir all offseason."
