Chase Johnson Excited for Fourth Trip to Knoxville Nationals
Inside Line Promotions – SANTA MARIA, Calif. (July 31, 2019) – Chase Johnson is bound for the Midwest to tackle the biggest event in winged sprint car competition.
Johnson and car owners Shawn and Cyndi Thomas will race at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, this Sunday during the 8th annual Bell Helmets Capitani Classic presented by Great Southern Bank before tackling the 59th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores next week.
“The mindset is to be better than what we were last year,” Johnson said. “We want to improve every time we’re there. The biggest goal is to make the A Main and be up front. We’ve had a great year so far and this is by far the best we’ve been heading into Nationals. I’m looking forward to being there and being a part of the Nationals.”
This year marks the fourth time Johnson will compete in the marquee event. His best result came last year when he placed 10th in the C Main during the finale.
Johnson is coming off a podium performance last Saturday during a King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series event at Santa Maria Raceway. He qualified eighth quickest and won a heat race before placing second in both the dash and main event.
“We ran second the first four or five laps of the feature,” he said. “As soon as we got to traffic we drove underneath the leader. We were really, really quick in the beginning. The track dried out a tad in turns three and four. We had a right rear tire grow, which made the car freer. The combination of those two made the car just a little bit slower so I had to baby turns three and four and Dominic (Scelzi) got by us with two laps to go.
“We were in the middle of traffic. We almost snuck back by him on the white flag lap, but I wasn’t able to do it. We were out front and up until Dominic was behind us we had a huge lead. I was pretty comfortable. When you lead that many laps and have a big lead, running second is hard to swallow.”
