Chase Johnson Captures Sprint Car Challenge Tour Win at Petaluma Speedway
Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (July 1, 2019) – Chase Johnson earned his sixth feature triumph of the season on Sunday evening at Petaluma Speedway, which hosted a Sprint Car Challenge Tour event.
The late-race victory was his third of the season at his home track and it capped a weekend when Johnson wasn’t expecting to be able to compete.
“It was a last-minute thrash and repair of an engine between my dad and Shawn Thomas,” he said. “We had unexpected engine issues Thursday night. Then we were not going to be racing at all. On Friday Shawn and my dad made some magic happen and were able to piece together the engine.”
Johnson opened the weekend on Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., where he qualified fifth quickest in his group, placed fourth in a heat race and charged from 16th to fifth in the Sprint Car Challenge Tour A Main.
“We always seem fast there and I thought we had a good chance at winning going in there,” he said. “We had to put ourselves in contention and we didn’t do that at the beginning of the night. It was nice to battle our way forward in the main event.”
The weekend concluded on Sunday at Petaluma Speedway. Johnson qualified third quickest in his group and he won a heat race to lock into the dash.
“We weren’t as fast as we’d have liked to be early in the night, but we were ale to win the heat so that got us into the dash,” he said. “We finished third in the dash and still weren’t as fast as we wanted to be. It was better in the main event. I felt like we could battle with Dominic (Scelzi) and Shane (Golobic). Things got interesting in traffic, but it didn’t play out with the cautions. Once they got together I knew we had to be there in position to capitalize on it.”
Johnson ran third for most of the race before a last-lap collision between the top two moved Johnson into the lead for the green-white-checkered finish.
“I saw them go into the corners and I knew both or at least one wouldn’t make it out,” he said. “I made sure I was able to make it out myself because they weren’t too far ahead. I would have liked to battle it out with both of them and have it not end that way, but we ended up winning so I’m not complaining. I’d rather be lucky than good any day.”
Johnson will take this weekend off before returning to action on July 13 at Petaluma Speedway with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series.
