Blurton Scores Second Win of Season Thanks to Helpful Advice

Inside Line Promotions – CALHAN, Colo. (June 26, 2018) – Zach Blurton got some advice from a fellow racer and used it to score his second 305ci sprint car win of 2018 last Saturday.

Blurton drove from his ninth starting spot to take the lead on Lap 11 and cruise to the United Rebel Sprint Series victory at El Paso County Raceway. With the win Blurton took over the lead in the URSS championship standings.

Blurton spent the following day thinking about fellow sprint car racer Jason Johnson, who passed away on Sunday.

“Ally and I want to extend our prayers and condolences to Jason Johnson’s family, friends and crew,” Blurton said. “Sunday afternoon as Ally and I were washing the race car I pulled the right rear mud cover off and there was a Jason Johnson Racing logo looking right at me. I had bought this wheel used a few years ago and just never wanted to take the logo off as I thought it was pretty cool. Jason will be looking over this car now every weekend.”

Saturday evening didn’t start too promising for Blurton.

“In the heat I was catching up to the field to line up and the car biked big time,” he said. “When we got to racing it did it again so I just decided to ride around in the slick.”

Blurton, who finished second in the heat race, said he texted fellow racer Jake Bubak, who has raced at El Paso County Raceway many times.

“El Paso is a small, D-shaped track and Jake told me to just idle around,” he said. “I didn’t understand it until about five laps into the feature. In the heat there was a nice cushion, but we had an intermission before the feature and I went out and looked at the track and the sun had sucked up all the moisture. I talked it over with my father-in-law and we tightened the car up some.

“The feature gets going and I’m up to fifth by the seventh lap just cruising around the bottom. We had a yellow and I got up to third after the restart. We had another caution on Lap 11 and I got the lead right after. We had another caution with six laps to go, but I just hunkered down around the bottom and drove away. As good as the car was I think if I tightened it up a little more it could have been even better.”

Blurton will take the momentum from his win to I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, Colo., this Saturday. It’s a track he hasn’t competed at since 2010.

“I’m really excited to get back to Fort Morgan,” he said. “I last raced there eight years ago when I was just starting out at the age of 13 and we got third.”

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT – Speedway Motors Shock Technologies

In late 2009 Speedway Motors created an on-site shock tuning and repair facility to provide customers with an alternative to sending their shocks back to the manufacturer. “Since switching to these gas shocks the car has been fantastic,” Blurton said. “I’ve fallen in love with these shocks. I want to thank Marcus Kennedy and Kevin Larkins at Speedway Motors Shock Technologies for all their help.

“I also want to thank my wife and my in-laws. It was just us four at the track this week and I appreciate all their hard work.”
