Cole Wood
A weekend of ups and downs challenges the whole CWR team
The Cole Wood Racing team started its first three-night race weekend of the year at McCool Junction Speedway in McCool Junction, NE. The night started out well with Wood advancing from the outside front row to capture the heat race win. The heat win garnered Wood a second row inside starting spot. Running in third for the first 12 laps he attempted a slide job twice on the second place car. Again attempting the pass for second he would contact the inside berm upsetting the racecar and eventually and mysteriously causing it to shut off as he exited turn two. Restarting at the tail of the field he would race his way back up to a 12th place finish for the night.
Next up was a return to Knoxville for another night of 410 racing at the country’s premier dirt track. Wood continued to struggle in qualifying timing in 16th quick out of 31 cars; which placed him on the pole of the first heat. Taking full advantage of his pole starting spot he led all 8 laps and won his heat. Qualifying for the feature through his heat race he lined up 14th for the nights feature. Saturday night’s feature represented the first night of the year where Wood failed to improve his starting spot throughout the race. After struggling all race he ended up finishing 20th.
The final night of racing was slated for I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, NE. Wood was excited to return to a track he’s done well at previously. Wood would start third in the second heat. Taking the green flag from the third spot Wood advanced to the point with a pass on the leader entering turn one and completed the pass exiting two winning his heat. Wood drew the fifth starting position for the feature but fell back to eighth on the start. Unfortunately that’s as good as his night would get. Exiting turn two the motor in the 17w blew up and sidelined what was looking to be a great run.
Next week sees the CWR 17w team competing with the Sprint Invaders on Friday in Independence, IA, Knoxville Raceway, Saturday night, and Husets Speedway on Sunday.
