Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (May 8, 2014) – Cole Wood is taking this weekend off after a violent crash last Saturday sent him to the hospital.
Wood was maneuvered toward the top 10 during the opening laps of the main event at Knoxville Raceway when he collided with another car exiting turn four. The impact sent him flipping, which ended with an overnight stay at the hospital in Knoxville.
“I was passing a bunch of cars on the top,” Wood said. “I was going to run around him on the top. He entered on the bottom and slid up. In the middle of the corner he was in the center. I guess he decided he wanted to exit on the top. I jumped his right rear tire and it was all bad after that. I remember the torque tube hit my right foot first and then it hit my left leg and then my right leg.”
Wood said doctors told him he has a bad sprain and deep bruising in his right ankle and foot. He is currently using crutches with his foot in a walking boot.
After taking this weekend off, Wood will attempt to return to action at Knoxville Raceway on May 17 and at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., on May 18 if he feels healthy enough.
“(The doctor) said I need to stay off it for a week or so,” Wood said. “I just need to be laying at home and icing it.”
Wood was also involved in a flip the previous night during POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series action at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo.
After powering from sixth to second place in his heat race, Wood started the main event on the outside of the front row. As a handful of cars battled for the lead on the opening lap, Wood caught a rut wrong and landed upside down to end his night.
