Briar Cheatham grabs first checkered flag of 2024 at Southern Raceway

PONCE DE LEON, Fla. (08/27/24) – In only his first full season of competing in the Late Model ranks, Briar Cheatham soared to Victory Lane on Saturday night with a flag-to-flag triumph at Southern Raceway aboard his D&H Sand Inc. / Three Trade Consultants / The Local Market No. 87 Late Model.

The 14-year-old Ponce de Leon, Fla., driver pulled off a clean sweep as he backed up the overall fast time honors with a dominant performance in the 20-lap feature.

“Big thanks to my dad and my crew chief (Cameron Kelly) for setting up the car, it was bad fast from the second we unloaded tonight,” Cheatham said. “We’re still learning a lot each night out, but to be able to be standing in Victory Lane tonight is pretty awesome. Need to thank my PayPaw and Granny for all of their support and all the sponsors on my car.”

Briar Cheatham returned to the driver’s seat of his D&H Sand Inc. No. 87 Late Model at Southern Raceway (Milton, Fla.) on Saturday as he competed in the weekly 604 Late Model class.

With 13 Late Models in the pit area, Cheatham earned the pole for the feature after setting the pace in time trials with a blistering 15.738-second lap. Leading flag-to-flag in the 20-lap affair, Briar parked his No. 87 machine in Victory Lane, his first of the season and first in the Late Model ranks.

Cheatham’s Labor Day weekend will kick off next Saturday at Deep South Speedway, followed by a return to Southern Raceway on Sunday for the $2,029-to-win Fox Labor Day Bash.
