Can-Am 358 Modified Field No Match For Derek Webb Friday Night

The Golden Jubilee Season at the Can-Am Speedway continued this past Friday night and the day was particularly special, as it was 50 years ago to the date, when the gates first opened at what was then known as Can-Am Winner’s Circle Speedway on June 14th 1974.

On that date Jim Clark and Gord Dobbins won the Modified and Stocker events with Lee Gill flagging the races. Fast forward to June 14th of 2024 and current weekly Chief starter Mike Laclair, dropped the green flag on five classes of exciting racing as Father’s Day weekend started of the right way with great racing and a fun night for all.

The night started with the Donath Motor Worx Limited Sportsman for a 12 lap contest and the mission for the entire field was simple, try to beat Logan Brown. The Clayton native had won 5 of the first 6 races including three in a row, but Brady Howard took the lead on lap 2 and was in total control over Camdin Cook and Genavieve Bartlett. On lap 4 the yellow flew for Joseph Fargo who spun in turn 4. On the next restart Howard continued to remain in front with Cook second, but Logan Brown was trying to charge forward. Over the remaining laps, Brady Howard would keep a steady lead and hold it all the way to the finish on this night as he scored his second win of the year. Camdin Cook backed up his Mohawk win Thursday with a runner up finish over Bartlett, Brown and Anthony Brownell.

Tucker Donath was looking to get his season back on track after a few tough weeks as he took the lead over Josh Verne Jr. and Andrew Hennessy. The top two drivers on this night had great cars on a tricky race track as Donath and Verne moved away from the field and tried to settle the race amongst themselves. On lap 10 a scary moment for Guy Gosselin as he clipped an infield tire sending him flipping several times in turn three, bringing out the red flag. On the restart Donath and Verne began to pull away as Andrew Hennessy did all he could to keep pace. On the final lap Josh Verne Jr. would make it close but it was not enough as Tucker Donath returned to the top spot for a second time this year. Josh Verne Jr. crossed 2nd for a fourth straight week. Andrew Hennessy, Ken Klinkowski and George Sanford completed the top 5.

One week ago, Lucas Fuller was upside down near the end of the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modified feature. This week he was leading the show over Derek Webb, RJ Tressider, Franklin Mackin and Preston Forbes. The track at the beginning of the race proved to be perfect for Fuller, who loves the bottom but Derek Webb was on the charge and searching for a faster lane. Afte many laps Derek Webb finally found that fast grove on the top side of the track, as he took over the lead on lap 12 and tried to run away from the field. On the same lap Tyler Corcoran slowed with a problem in turn two. The next restart saw Webb draw away from the field one more time but behind him Lucas Fuller was getting a challenge from Preston Forbes for the runner up spot, while behind him Tim Fuller made a big move from 8th to the number 4 position as he was looking for his third straight win. As the laps clicked off Derek Webb got faster and built up a big lead on the rest of the field. Without the help of a yellow flag over the final laps, Preston Forbes and the rest of the field had no chance as Derek Webb marched on to his first win since August 26th of 2022 at Can-Am. Preston Forbes finished a season best second, with Tim Fuller getting around Lucas Fuller for 3rd off turn 4, while Shaun Shaw completed the top 5.

After a crash in the heat race one week ago that put him on the trailer before the feature, Justin Gadbaw had a better start to the day as he took the lead at the start of the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature over Trevor Gibbons and Greg Brinklow. The yellow would fly quickly for Keegan Nier who slowed on the back stretch. Gadbaw would grab the lead again but charging to the front in a hurry was Watertown New York’s Tyler Stevenson, as he used the top side of the speedway. On lap 6 that lane proved to be the fastest as he drove by Gadbaw for the lead and began to put on a clinic. Behind him Brennan Moore and Tyler Corcoran were also on the charge as Moore would get to third around Kingston’s Greg Brinklow while Corcoran had moved to 5th. With 5 laps remaining the outside lane was the dominant place to be and Stevenson had the car going well while Moore and Corcoran tried to keep pace. Points leader Mike Fowler was also making some moves on the track late in going as he charged to the 4th spot but needed some help to catch the top 3. At the checkered flag it was Tyler Stevenson getting his first win of the season, while Moore collected another runner up finish over Tyler Corcoran, Mike Fowler and Xavier Andrews.

The night would be completed with a 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature which took a couple of tries to get underway. Two quick cautions prevented any laps from being completed. Once the green flew again it was OJ White leading lap 1 over Jared Gilson and Damien Bechler. Gilson had a fast car and was able to get the top spot away on lap 3, however a couple laps later Damien Bechler would get out front, as last weeks winner Francis White charged to the number two spot. After a quick yellow on lap 8 for Anthony St. Mary Jr. who slowed in turn 2, Francis White wanted a turn at the front and took over the lead on lap 9 while behind him Corey Valade and Justin Pope were on the move as they challenged Damien Bechler for second. White appeared to be headed for victory but on the final lap Kayden Paquette spun in turn 4 forcing the yellow out and a 1 lap shootout. On the final restart Francis White was able to hold off the challenges of Corey Valade and Justin Pope to record his second win in a row. Damien Bechler and Jared Gilson would complete the top 5 finishers.

Next week we honor our Armed Forces at Can-Am Speedway as all active-duty military will be admitted free to the grandstands Friday night. A full card in all five classes will hit the speedway for hot laps just after 6pm with the first heat race going green at 7pm.
