Vintage Victory and High-Speed Showdowns: A Thrilling Night at Can-Am Speedway

The Golden Jubilee Season continued Friday night at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York. A great card of racing was highlighted by the one and only appearance for the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club.

The Vintage Cars took to the track first and defending race winner Jason Riddell was the early pace setter for the 70s and 80s class over Ian Gordon and Randy Gaudet. Behind them Greg Hale was driving away with the 50s and 60s feature over Jeff Cledgett. On lap 6 Gordon was able to get the lead from Riddell after a spirited battle as he began to draw away from the field. Over the final laps, after Jason Riddell retired to the infield with a problem, Randy Gaudet would make a run at the leader. However the former Can Am Karting champion was too strong on this night, scoring his second series win of the year, over Gaudet, Josh Powers, Gavin Riddell and Steve Billings. Grege Hale would go unchallenged for the win, his third in a row at Can Am, over Jeff Cledgett and Joey Hilts.

Brady Howard took the lead early in the 12 lap Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman over Genavieve Bartlett and Josh Hughto. Howard was not challenged throughout the event as behind him, Bartlett was running second with Logan Brown on the charge from the number three position. With 5 laps remaining Howard maintained a big lead as Brown got by for second over Bartlett, but had a long way to catch the leader. On this night nobody was catching Brady Howard as he scored his third win of 2024. Logan Brown crossed in second over Genavieve Bartlett, Camdin Cook and Josh Hughto.

Dan Beachard looked strong in the early part of the 30 lap Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modified feature event. Beachard led early over Tyler Meeks and Nick Webb. On lap 5 Camero Black slowed with an issue and headed pitside for the night. When the green flew Tyler Meeks took over the top spot, but on the move was Billy Dunn. The Watertown driver moved into the top three on lap 10 as he tried at will to run down Tyler Meeks, who was looking for his first Modified win since 2017. As the laps clicked off Billy Dunn closed the gap making it a fantastic battle for the lead with Meeks. On lap 20 Dunn made the winning pass on the outside of turn 4 to take the top spot away and tried to drive away. Meeks would stay close to Dunn hoping for a mistake, but that never happened, as Billy Dunn would hold off Tyler Meeks for his second win of the year. Meeks ran second with Dan Beachard, Shaun Shaw and Ryan Bartlett.

A spirited battled between Dustin Hutton and Dylan Moore highlighted the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group Dirtcar Sportsman feature. The top two drivers ran wheel to wheel for more than 10 laps, putting on a fantastic show, with neither driver having a clear advantage. Hutton was able to pull out to a car length over Moore by lap 13 as he was in search f his first win in a long time at Can Am. A yellow for Tyler Corcoran, who blew a tire in turn four. He would return to the race but was not a factor at the finish. On the restart Mike Fowler made his way forward taking second from Moore on lap 15 and then ran down Dustin Hutton for the lead and getting it on lap 17. From there points leader Mike Fowler would drive away for his second win of the season. Dustin Hutton, Eric Nier, Brennan Moore and Jessica Power completed the top 5 at the finish.

Tony Frezzo has had nothing but bad luck during the 2024 season in the Sundance Leisure Thundercar ranks, but got it turned around on this night as he led early over Jared Gilson and points leader Damien Bechler. With Frezzo in front Damien Bechler got by for second, but had a long way to go to catch the leader. Over the final laps, 2021 track champion Tony Frezzo looked strong and finally shook off the demons to score his first win of the season. Lyle Robinson charged to second at the finish over Damien Bechler, Jared Gilson and Anthony St. Mary Jr.
