Sheppard notches runner-up finish in USA Nationals prelim at Cedar Lake
After Mother Nature shifted Thursday’s preliminary event to Friday afternoon, Brandon Sheppard rejoined the World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series at Cedar Lake Speedway (New Richmond, Wis.) on Friday for the 37th annual USA Nationals weekend.
Pinned on the eighth row for Friday’s opener via a third-place heat finish, Sheppard stormed forward 10 spots in the 25-lap affair to register a sixth-place finish.
Later Friday night, Brandon timed in third-fastest in his 24-car group before placing first in his heat. With the redraw placing him on the second row for the final preliminary feature, Sheppard led laps 18-23 before ultimately crossing the line in second. He joined race-winner Ryan Gustin on the podium with Jonathan Davenport coming in third.
For the $50,000-to-win USA Nationals finale on Saturday, Sheppard suffered a broken brake line in the opening laps of the main event that dropped him back to a disappointing 27th-place finish in the rain-shortened 56-lap feature.
Sheppard holds a 26-point advantage atop the latest World of Outlaws point standings.
