Doug Hammaker Earns Second-Straight Dirty 30 Victory at BAPS Motor Speedway

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Doug Hammaker seems to thrive in 358 Sprint Car events with higher posted purses at BAPS Motor Speedway.

Last season, Hammaker topped a pretty stout field to capture the Dirty Deeds Repair and Fab Dirty 30. And considering his recent performance in the division, which consists of a win and five-straight top-five finishes in the region, he was in line to back up that triumph.

The Grantville, Pa., driver lived up to that billing on Saturday night. He made short work of his competitors at the front of the field and earned his second-straight Dirty 30 victory and a nice $3,000 payday on Hall of Fame Night at the speedway.

Logan Rumsey started on the pole and got the jump on fellow front-row starter Kody Hartlaub. Hammaker, who started third, settled into third on the opening lap, shot into second on the next circuit and gave chase.

The first caution of the event came out on Lap 4. Dave Hollar and Hall of Fame inductee Frankie Herr were involved in an incident that took them both out of the race.

Hammaker took time making his move. He closed to within .779 seconds on the ninth circuit and knocked another half-second off the lead one lap later.

Rumsey was on borrowed time. Hammaker blew around the leader on Lap 11 and opened up a gap on the field. As for Rumsey, his race came to an end on Lap 13, when he came to a stop on the backstretch.

After Chris Frank took a violent flip on the restart, Hammaker controlled the race. Derek Locke, who advanced from fifth to second on Lap 14, couldn’t make a bid and fell 1.204 seconds short at the stripe.

Hartlaub finished third, with Steve Owings and 17th-place starter Chad Criswell completing the top five. Zach Newlin charged from 23rd to sixth in the final rundown.

In the Meyers RV Super Sportsman main event, Matt Ondek advanced from his fifth-place starting spot to take the victory in the 25-Lap feature.

Luke Deatrick started on the pole and led the first 12 circuits before giving way to Ondek, who stretched his lead. Still the march to Victory Lane wasn’t easy thanks to a pair of cautions in the last five laps.

Kenny Edkin charged into the top five from his 12th-place starting spot on Lap 8. He got up to third on Lap 21 and slipped around Deatrick on the 24th circuit.

Despite closing on the leader, Edkin fell short. Ondek had just enough heading to the checker to take the win by .472 seconds. Edkin, Deatrick, Troy Rhome, and John Edkin completed the top five.

Devin Frey went unchallenged in Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model action, leading all 20 laps in the main event. He took the win by 1.863 seconds.

Third-place starter Jed Latshaw finished third, with Travis Horan, Matt Adams, and 12th-place starter Matt Murphy completing the top five.

The Superior Homes Extreme Stock main event was in the hands of Patrick McClane, and he never looked back after taking the lead on Lap 2. But the 25-Lap affair was far from easy at the finish.

Sam Rial harassed the leader over the second half of the race. A caution with one to go gave him one more shot at the win, but McClane was able to hold on in a thriller by a mere .102 seconds and the stripe.

Rial settled for a hard-fought second-place finish. Pole-sitter Bob Scott Jr., Hunter Fulton, and Ty Huntsberger completed the top five.
