Wednesdays with Wayne - Turns Three and Four!
(Bill W) September 30, 2015 – Wayne Johnson found a nemesis in turns three and four at Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri last weekend. He spent way too much time there in Friday’s Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial, first in the heat, and then the feature. Wayne plans on running with the Nebraska 360 Sprint Series this weekend at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska.
Things started well on Friday, when Wayne went from fourth to lead his heat race. “The car was really good,” he says. “I overdrove it in three and four a couple times and jumped the edge of the racetrack. I just screwed up trying too hard.”
He would finish third in the heat, and won the B main from the pole. He would start 18th in the feature. “My car was working well,” says Wayne. “I was able to get all the way up to eighth behind (Brad) Loyet. He and (Sam) Hafertepe were racing and that was holding me up. I screwed up in three and four again and hit the fence. What can I say?”
The contact sent the team back to square one for Saturday’s finale. “We rebuilt the car, but something was out of whack,” says Wayne. “The car was just horrible all night long. Finally, we stumbled onto something.”
Wayne struggled in his heat, going from sixth to fourth, and then backed up in the B to fourth. He took a very rare ASCS provisional to start the feature. “That was our second provisional that we’ve ever taken,” he says. “We took one back in 2012. We made it up to tenth (from 23rd). We were so far behind the 8-ball with the car, we just tried to adjust it the way that it was. We didn’t really find the problem until we got back to the shop.”
He’s ready for this weekend. “We’re going to go over and run with the Nebraska 360’s at I-80,” says Wayne. “We usually run well over there, so that makes sense for us to do some testing there this week.”
