Wednesdays with Wayne – Canadian Nationals This Weekend!
(Bill W) September 10, 2014 – Wayne Johnson is preparing for this weekend’s Canadian Nationals at the Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario. The event will see practice on Thursday, with racing on Friday and Saturday. Last weekend’s Cole Cup at Utica-Rome Speedway in New York didn’t go as well as planned, so the Knoxville, Iowa driver is champing at the bit to get back on the track this week.
Setup issues plagued Wayne at last weekend’s Cole Cup. “The last time we were way too loose there, and this time, I was way too tight,” he says. “It was slick, but we were stupid tight all night. We just weren’t any good.”
He would make the show in a race sanctioned by the Empire Super Sprints and Patriot Sprint Tour, but he would pull off early. “We ended up starting sixteenth in the feature,” says Wayne. “The car was just not good. We ended up parking it.”
This weekend’s $12,000 to win event has become a favorite for Wayne. “I’m really looking forward to the Canadian Nationals,” he says. “Ohsweken is always a track we like going back to.”
Drivers will be at the event from far and wide. Shane Stewart, Paige Polyak, Chuck “The Cobra” Hebing, Bryan Howland, Dustin Daggett, Steve Poirier and Jared Zimbardi are just a few of the early entrants. “There’s always good competition here for sure,” says Wayne. “It’s just gotten better and better over the years too. It’s one of the premiere races out there.”
Wayne was able to win the 4th Annual Canadian Nationals in 2008. “That was really a highlight for me,” he says. “We were able to come up here and win that for Glenn (Styres) in 2008. That was actually the first time I’d ever seen this track.”
