Wednesdays with Wayne – Hockett/McMillin Memorial Next!

(Bill W) September 26, 2012 – Wayne Johnson is excited to head south to the annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial this weekend at the Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri. He finished up last weekend with a fifth and seventh place finish at the “Fall Brawl” at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska.

Friday night’s prelim at the “Fall Brawl” saw Wayne finish second in his heat race to a hot driver. “Jason started on the front row outside of us,” he says. “I got the jump on him at the beginning, but it wasn’t long and he drove by us and made us look stupid. We race this series to be apples to apples, but compared to that Ford, it seems like it’s apples to diamonds or something.”

The Knoxville, Iowa driver started ninth and checkered fifth in the preliminary feature. “Our car was really good,” says Wayne. “We just didn’t have anything for those guys up front. We were pretty good there the first night. We were just a little bit off from the guys up front. (Brian) Brown is always good there, and he ran third to those Fords.”

In Saturday’s finale, Wayne started outside row two of his heat race. “We were able to get the lead in that deal after the 28 car broke,” he says. “Once we inherited the lead, Jason came back by us again. We’re going to keep working hard. I don’t think anyone has anything for him right now.”

Wayne would struggle a bit in the feature. “It slicked off quite a bit the second night,” says the 2000 ASCS National champion. “We were just too loose. We started seventh and ran seventh.”

Wayne runs second in the Lucas Oil ASCS National series going into Friday and Saturday’s big event. “I’ve really never been that good at Wheatland,” he says. “The last couple times there we’ve really struggled. I think last time down there, we were 16th or so. I remember Cody Baker smoked us all in the heat race. We won’t be using any notes from before.”

Wayne’s World

Rod Schutte asks: Do you have any favorite memories of Jesse Hockett?

Wayne Answers: I have a lot, but not many are printable! We were in Perth (Australia) and we woke up and saw a boat loose in the bay there. He said he was going to go get this boat, and he did. After he got back, he found out it was the Swan River, and in the last 6-8 months, they had had about six shark attacks!
