I'm sure most of you know the champion driver of the #36 front-wheel drive car, Billy Luckhurst. Billy is from Elsie, Michigan, and has been racing for five years. He grew up in a racing family and watched his dad and two uncles race. Billy spent every weekend at different race tracks, so they became like a second home to him. During the 2023 race season, he won a FWD championship and won his very first race that he could celebrate with his daughter. It was also the second year that he reset the Kyle Crump track record. Growing up around racing means that Billy has learned to love many different aspects that have helped him reach his first championship. He has learned to love the challenge of the competition, the work that goes into setting up the cars, and the overall knowledge that is gained when you become a driver. With that being said, he has also learned how to handle his losses in a calm fashion. He gets back to work to try new setups to be better and faster. His uncle Bill, who is like an idol for him, has played a big role in all of this. Like I said earlier, Billy grew up in a racing family and has traveled to many different tracks. Out of all of them, Kalamazoo Speedway is his favorite. He said that it is the most challenging track he has been to and he had to figure out how to be fast. "It's just a different track" was his best way to describe it. Thanks to the help of all of Billy's sponsors (B&D Trucking, CDL Services, Lucky's Smokehouse, and Coyote Chassis), he plans on trying to enter the Modified class soon. He recently bought a Modified and has been working on building it, but it all depends on whether it is ready in time for the 2023 season or not. Either way, we will all see Billy and his race crew (John Eastman, his dad Phil, his uncle Mike, Laci Donnert, and Alex Donnert) at Owosso Speedway with the FWD championship car. Billy's family has such a long history at Owosso Speedway, including 12 Modified championships that his uncle won, and we can't wait to continue watching Billy pursue the generational legacy of racing.
