Dover Contends for Third RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Nationals Title Before Late-Race Problem
Inside Line Promotions – EAGLE, Neb. (Sept. 7, 2017) – Jack Dover was on pace to battle for his third triumph during the 5th annual RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Nationals last weekend at Eagle Raceway before a late-race problem ended his night early.
“We had a solid weekend going,” he said. “We had a good, good chance of winning the final night.”
Dover kicked off the weekend on Friday by winning a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. He then maneuvered from sixth to third place in the main event to lock into the third starting position for Sunday’s A Main.
“We tried some stuff and we kept up with Jason Martin and John Carney II so we knew we had good speed,” he said.
Dover returned to the high-banked oval on Saturday to participate in the Race of Champions. He maneuvered from sixth to fourth place during the special event, which marked his 15th top five of the season.
“I didn’t want to risk tearing up my race car since I knew we had such a great starting position on Sunday,” he said. “We ended up trying some stuff with the setup to learn. The track was real tough to pass on, but we made up a couple of positions.”
The event, which featured 111 drivers, concluded on Sunday with Dover lining up on the outside of the front row in a race that starts drivers three wide.
“We ran third until about halfway,” he said. “We were in lapped traffic and I got to second. I felt like I had a good shot to challenge for the lead and we had a caution with five laps to go. When the yellow came out I realized my foot was wet. I knew something wasn’t right. About a half a lap after taking off on the restart the engine quit running.”
Dover’s race ended early because of a loose fuel nozzle line. He was credited with a 23rd-place finish.
Dover is slated to return to action this Friday at Eagle Raceway and Saturday at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., with the Carpet Land Nebraska 360 Sprints.
