Jack Dover
DOVER IS ASCS MIDWEST CHAMPION BY RECORD 470 POINTS
Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (Sept. 19) – The number two was the theme for Jack Dover last weekend.
First, he pulled the second highest number in the pill draw. The “70” started him last – ninth – in his ASCS Midwest Region/NCRA heat race last Friday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.
“It didn’t start out as well as you’d want with that high of a pill draw,” he said. “Plus, we had Brian Brown, Don Droud Jr., Jeremy Campbell, Lee Grosz and a couple of other solid guys starting in front. I knew I was going to have to pass a lot of cars.”
The 21-year-old from Springfield, Neb., did just that. He picked up three positions within two laps before Brown and Grosz crashed in turn four on the third lap. Dover restarted in fourth place and was able to pass a car in each of the two ensuing laps to be in second place at the midway point of the 10-lap heat race.
Dover began to cut down Droud Jr.’s sizeable lead and the two exited turn four on the final lap next to each other. In a drag race to the checkered flag, Droud Jr. won by less than half a car length.
“That was a really exciting finish,” Dover said. “And I knew that driving from ninth to second would not only get me into the feature, but also the redraw.”
Dover, who had the most points after the heat races, drew the number two in the redraw, which started him on the outside of the front row for a dash. In one of the most competitive races of the night, polesitter Ryan Roberts narrowly held off Dover for the win. Dover edged Jordan Boston and Jason Johnson for the runner-up position and his spot outside the front row for the 25-lap main event.
The side-by-side competition continued from the drop of the green flag in the feature. Roberts led the first lap by several inches before Dover took the lead on lap two. Johnson followed into second and the duo swapped the top spot for several laps. Dover regained the lead momentarily twice more before Johnson capitalized on his momentum to lead at the flag stand each time.
On a restart with eight laps remaining, Dover rocketed to the bottom in turn one with Johnson going to the top of the track. Dover slid up the track in turn two and nearly completed the slide job for the lead, but Johnson maneuvered his car between Dover and the backstretch wall to maintain first place.
However, a lengthy red flag delayed the race when another driver crashed violently in turn three during that lap. Because of safety concerns and incoming rain, the race was called and Dover finished second – his 26th top five of the season. It was the third race of the night that he finished in second place.
That also secured Dover’s spot in history as he claimed the ASCS Midwest Region championship by a 470-point margin. It was the largest margin of victory in any ASCS regional battle ever and it was Dover’s second ASCS Midwest championship.
He will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., with the ASCS National Tour for the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.
