Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (Sept. 14, 2020) – Roger Crockett led a majority of the Casey’s General Store Midwest Fall Brawl at I-80 Speedway last Saturday before he finished with a season-best runner-up result.

It marked Crockett’s second podium of the season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour and helped him maintained the second position in the championship standings.

“We unloaded fast and the car was really good,” he said. “We felt great in hot laps and really good in the heat. We didn’t get a great start in the qualifier, but got a couple of spots running where nobody else was.”

Crockett won his heat race from third and he advanced from fifth to third place in a qualifier to rank fourth in event points. That lined him up on the outside of the second row for the main event.

“We got the lead early and I had no clue we were that far gone,” he said. “I didn’t feel like the bottom was very fast. I had patience and was really making sure I was in the moisture on exit.”

Crockett took the lead on Lap 5 and built a several-second advantage on the field before a caution bunched everyone up.

“That yellow flag came out, which I didn’t want to see,” he said. “I was contemplating changing my line. At that point you have to stick with what got you there. I kept running the bottom. When you’re leading it’s really hard to change your line up.”

Crockett led until Lap 26 when Sam Hafertepe Jr., who had found the track cleaned off toward the top, claimed the top spot. Crockett rallied to regain the lead for Lap 30 and Lap 31 before Hafertepe Jr. led the final few laps.

“Long story short, it would have been nice to win, but I think we did have the fastest car all night long,” Crockett said. “It’s that much harder to take on a track that is wide enough to pass. You have to be happy with speed, too.

“It’s been a frustrating year. I think we’ve only run 14 360 races. I feel like we’ve been fast enough to win 10 of them. We haven’t got ourselves in the correct position to win races. It’s a tough sport sometimes to find your way to the front. That’s why when I have the opportunity to win and I don’t make it happen it stings. We’ve been happy with our car all year long. Our shocks, our frame, our motor, everything is working together extremely well.”

Crockett returns to action this Thursday through Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., during the 10th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. He finished in the top 10 all three nights last year.

“We’re going into a place we’ve run good at,” he said. “I know we’re one of the cars to beat. That facility is phenomenal. It is a drawn out few days with so many cars, but that’s part of it. There’s a lot of time to be a race fan, too.”
