Crockett Earns Top 10 During All Three Nights of Hockett/McMillin Memorial

Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 24, 2019) – Roger Crockett produced one of his most efficient weekends of the season during the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.

Crockett garnered a top-10 finish each night at the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event hosted by Lucas Oil Speedway.

“Overall, I’m really happy,” he said. “We were one of only I think four national drivers that made the main event without a provisional on Saturday. We didn’t have to run a B Main all weekend. And we went from sixth to third in points. It’s a slim margin, but it was a good weekend for us. We’re happy to escape there with good runs and our car in good shape.”

Crockett opened the tripleheader by advancing from third to second place in both a heat race and a qualifier on Thursday. He then finished where he started – sixth – in the main event.

“The car felt really good in hot laps,” he said. “We were the fastest car when we went out and that carried through for another session so that felt good. We had really good speed and the car felt great in the heat race and qualifier. In the main event we weren’t that great. The track was a lot slicker than I thought it would be. We held our own the whole race. I had higher expectations than that, but we weren’t quite good enough.”

Crockett advanced from sixth to fourth in a heat race on Friday. He then won a qualifier from third before picking up a position to place third in the main event.

“We were a little off in hot laps and the heat even though we went from sixth to fourth,” he said. “We made a couple of changes and the car came to life in the qualifier. Then in the feature there was a wreck and I have no clue how I missed it. Upon missing that we packed 30-to-40 pounds of mud in the front of it. There’s nothing you can do about it so we ran the whole race like that. The car was pretty good. We got next to (Josh) Baughman for the lead a couple of times and couldn’t clear him. I spent too much time on the bottom and let Seth (Bergman) get a run on us so we finished third.”

Crockett ranked third out of the 70-plus drivers following the two preliminary nights. That lined him up on the inside of the second row for Saturday’s main event.

“We had quick time out of the eight cars in locked-in hot laps,” he said. “We virtually made zero changes and the car was absolutely horrible in the main event. We were way, way, way too tight. Under green flag conditions I could hold my own, but on restarts or if I had to lift for somebody it was a handful. To wind up 10th is still pretty good when you had a car barely capable of making it around the race track. I should have freed my car up. It was devastating thinking we had a strong chance to win the race and we worked so hard to put ourselves in that position, but at least we were able to salvage a top 10.”

Crockett’s 10th-place result was his 19th top 10 of the season. He now ranks third in the ASCS National Tour championship standings with only six races remaining this season.

The next ASCS National Tour event is Oct. 10-11 at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla., for the Fall Fling. Crockett might tackle the Short Track Nationals the prior weekend, but it will depend on his work load.
