Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (June 25, 2019) – The 48th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup was either feast or famine for Roger Crockett, who sandwiched a pair of nights battling mechanical woes with his first feature victory of the season.

Crockett struggled with mechanical problems last Thursday during the first night of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour tripleheader at Skagit Speedway. He placed seventh in a heat race and eighth in a B Main.

“Something is wrong with the car,” he said. “It’s not running right. The motor almost dies. We changed motors on Friday. It was a million times better, but we were still chasing all night. We changed the fuel tank before the main event to eliminate that. It was such a dry track for the main it didn’t seem to matter as much.”

Fortune turned around on Friday as Crockett powered from sixth to win a heat race. He then gained a position to finish fifth in a qualifier, ranking him fifth in overall points. That started him on the inside of the third row for the A Main.

“I ran the top the first of the race and we were good up there,” he said. “I kept playing with what I could do to run the middle. There was a restart where I could run down there and run next to Robbie (Price) for a couple of laps. Then the red happened that wiped out the top two and that made our job a little easier. I was able to get right after it at that point.”

Crockett took the lead on Lap 15 and he led the final 11 laps. His win was his first since capturing the ASCS National Tour season opener in March 2018.

“Being that it’s a prelim and looking at the big picture of Saturday night it didn’t seem like a huge deal,” he said. “However, with the way it’s been going it’s a relief to win one.”

The victory combined with Thursday’s performance ranked Crockett eighth in overall event points, which locked him into the eighth starting position for Saturday’s $15,000-to-win finale.

“The car took off the first five or six laps,” he said. “We had a good start and went eighth to sixth right away. Then it started doing its thing. It sputters and almost quits. I don’t know what it’s doing. I don’t think it’s the motor. Our lap times slowed down at least a half a second. The thing wouldn’t go as fast as we needed to go the rest of the race and restarts were terrible because people would outmotor us and drive right by.”

Crockett, who ended 12th on Saturday, will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., during the Fred Brownfield Classic.

“We really need to find our issue, but I’m happy with how we’ve got the car handling now,” he said. “Grays Harbor has been a better track for me than Skagit so I’m looking forward to that.”

Crockett won an ASCS National Tour race at Grays Harbor Raceway during his most recent 360 sprint car race there on July 1, 2017.
