Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 18, 2017) – Josh Baughman had a fast race car, but he lacked luck last weekend during the 30th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires at I-30 Speedway.
Baughman kicked off the ASCS Mid-South Region event on Thursday by advancing from fifth to third place in a heat race before he finished where he started – second – in a qualifier. That ranked 11th out of more than 70 drivers and lined him up on the inside of the sixth row for the 25-lap A Main.
Unfortunately, Baughman was involved in a wild crash that resulted in him flipping in turns three and four while battling for a top 10.
“We had a racing incident and got upside down again,” he said. “I was running the middle and another driver tried running to the infield. When he got to the turn he pitched the car sideways and it smoked my left rear tire with his right rear. The big tire wins every time. It tore up everything but the frame.”
Baughman, who was credited with a 20th-place result, and the team rebuilt the car for Friday’s race. He won a heat race before placing sixth in a qualifier. That relegated Baughman to a B Main, in which a third-place finish transferred him into the back of the main event. He gained a trio of positions to finish 17th.
The team entered Saturday searching for a bit of luck, but didn’t find it.
“We drew the No. 150 out of 150 in the pill draw,” he said.
That lined Baughman up last – 11th – in a heat race. He picked up several positions before a mistake sent him off the track.
“That showdown race is the whole weekend,” he said. “I think we were battling for fifth and went off the end of the track. That one race was worth more points than almost two nights combined. I got a little over the curb and it cost us.”
Baughman placed ninth, which relegated him to the 10th starting position in a B Main. He gained three positions to finish seventh.
“Having Wayne (Priddy) and only one crew guy, to overcome the opening night crash and how much racing we did, all and all it was a good weekend,” he said. “We made both mains on preliminary nights. The results don’t show it, but I feel like we had a good weekend.”
Baughman will take the next two weeks off before wrapping up the season Nov. 2-4 at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., for the Textron Off Road World Finals with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
