Matt Covington
Top-5 Weekend For Covington at Elma
CG Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (June 23, 2021) Matt Covington ended last weekend’s Fred Brownfield Classic with 3rd and 5th place finishes aboard his Triple X/Shark Racing Engines mount with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
Matt began Saturday night with a heat race win from the outside pole, locking him into the redraw. Finding himself in the pole position, Covington was able to capitalize and jump to the lead at the green flag. He had to fight hard to keep Garen Linder from getting by on the bottom. The battle ended around lap 12 when a caution allowed Cam Smith to sneak by both drivers on the bottom. Matt was eventually shuffled back to 3rd where he remained until the checkers.
“I hate that I gave up the win after starting on the pole,” Matt commented, “But Linder and Cam were just a little bit better than we were. Getting to run that softer tire caused us to miss the setup a little.”
Sunday night had the A-Rock Materials/Loose Change machine starting 3rd in the heat race. To his advantage, a caution on the opening lap gave him the pole position. Taking the lead on the start, he won by a substantial margin. This effort granted Covington the 3rd position in the feature. During the A, Matt moved around the top 5, but ultimately crossed the finish line in 5th.
“Sunday, we were a rocket ship in the heat race,” said Matt. “We thought it would do well in the feature, being a little more free, so we didn’t change much setup wise for the feature. Unfortunately, that ended up costing us. We were too loose to gain any ground and were probably lucky just to hang on to the top 5. It’s a little disappointing to miss out on such good starting positions, but we’re still sitting good in the points. Matt Howard is doing a great job and we work well together. Hopefully we can keep up the consistency going into Dirt Cup this weekend and get the win.”
Up next for Matt and the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour is Skagit Speedway for the prestigious Dirt cup.
