SEDALIA, Mo. – The ASCS Warrior Region opener started off great for Jonathan Cornell, but ended prematurely, as an incident with a slower car put Cornell, who was leading at the time, flipping through the air at his hometown track, the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia. In the end, Cornell was scored with a 13th-place finish.

The Sunday afternoon event began with 23 sprint cars in the pit area behind the back stretch fence. With several National Tour drivers in attendance, Cornell was hoping to keep the $5,000 winners share for the local contingent. With his pole position for heat race action, he began the event with a convincing victory by nearly a straightaway over the second-place finisher.

After the redraw of the top eight starting positions for the 25-lap main event, Cornell found himself alongside polesitter Cody Baker on the front row. The race track did not afford much for passing, but Cornell took advantage of a bobble on lap four to dart into the lead. A caution soon after stacked the field up behind the Starline Brass / Kiowa Line Builders No. 28, but Cornell quickly pulled away on the restart. It was not until lap nine that he would have to navigate slower traffic, but as he reeled in the first car, he ran out of space as the other driver directed his machine toward the infield. Cornell’s right front tire hit left rear and shot skyward and tumbling down the back straightaway. Cornell emerged from the wreckage unscathed, but his Maxim Chassis was destroyed.

With an ASCS Red River Region event nearby scheduled for April 22, Cornell and team quickly started preparing a new mount. One day after that event at Humboldt (Kan.) Speedway, the Warrior Region joins Red River for a Saturday night co-sanctioned race at Springfield (Mo.) Raceway.
