Scotty Thiel
Top 10 at Chilton – Motor Problems at Manitowoc
Scotty Thiel received a phone call on Tuesday afternoon from fellow driver Kurt Davis to take the wheel of his other car for Wednesday evenings Chilton Throwdown Race with the MSA Series. Scotty’s #64 car did not have a motor back yet and he decided to take up the opportunity and see what he could do. A few adjustments were made to make Scotty comfortable in the Davis 6k machine but he was all set after the hot lap session. Thiel drew a high pill which set him to go out late in the qualifying order, but that didn’t stop him from going on and laying down a solid lap that set him third quick on the night!
A third quick qualifying time would set Thiel to start sixth in the night’s ten lap heat race event. Scotty used the high side to make a few passes early on and after a late restart, jumped down low and made the pass to cross the finish line in the third position. That finish, with the passing point structure, placed Thiel in the six car, six lap dash for cash. Kurt and Scotty started on the front row of the dash event. The pole position was given to Kurt while Scotty took the outside pole position. They came down to take the green and Scotty was able to use the high side to his advantage early on. He battled with Davis for a lap before making the top side momentum work and took over the lead. He never looked back and would go on to take the checkered flag! By winning the MSA dash, it would place Thiel to start in the seventh position for the night’s 35 lap Chilton Throwdown A-main event.
The crew made a few adjustments to Thiel’s car for the main. Scotty knew it was going to be a tricky track and passing would be difficult. After going green, Scotty worked the bottom side for a few laps but didn’t gain much ground. A battle was taking place in the mid pack and Thiel was able to finally get up to the high side and gain some positions on the field. He worked his way up to the fifth position a few times over the course of the main but struggled to move up anymore positions. Scotty bounced back from fifth to seventh several times over the course of the show. Restarts were beginning to get really tricky. A late caution came out and Thiel had been battling for the sixth position but the main would get called due to time and they went back to the last completed lap, placing Thiel in the seventh place finishing position.
“It was a fun night to say the least. Had to get use to Kurt’s car but overall had a good feel for it. Qualified pretty well and that dash win felt good. Just wish we could have done a little more in the main. But hey, it’s in one piece and everyone had a good time. Can’t thank Kurt and his crew enough for the opportunity to drive the 6k tonight!” Scotty mentioned after the night.
Scotty and his team worked hard the next two days to prepare for Friday nights racing action at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway in Manitowoc, WI with their own #64 car. They built a new car since they had switched their original MSA car with their ASCS Motor after a wreck at Oshkosh occurred. Scotty mentioned the car felt good after hotlaps and the crew quickly prepared for the heat race event. Thiel would start sixth again in the ten lap heat race event. The field took the green and Scotty began to figure out what line was faster. He began to notice the temperature claiming as the race continued. He didn’t push the issue much long but still was able to finish the race in the fifth spot. Scotty quickly pulled off and got out of the car to explain what he felt in the car. The team decided it was best to scratch the rest of the night and not risk any injury to the motor.
The Scott Thiel Motorsports team will travel to the ELDORA SPEEDWAY this coming weekend to race with the NRA Sprint Invaders which will be a support series for the Kings Royal weekend! This will be a first time stop for Scotty and the team but they are prepared for this event. Keep up to date for results on www.scottythiel.com and also on their Facebook and Twitter pages!
