Scotty Thiel's Short Track National Debut Recap
Scotty Thiel and the Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 Sprint Car made their debut at the 24th Annual Short Track Nationals in Little Rock, Arkansas last weekend. 100 sprint car were in attendence over the course of the weekend. Scotty drew a 14 pill for his Thursday night qualifying day which set him to start on the pole of the 5th Heat race event. Thiel spun his tires at the start and dropped back to the second position. He was all over the leaders tail and tried to complete several slid jobs but could not get the momentum coming off the corner. Coming into turns three and four on the last lap, the leader blew a radiator line, dropping a line of water, and spun out. A cloud of smoke rose up and Scotty could not see a thing. Trying to save the car, Thiel slid off the banking and wouldn't cross the line. He was still scored in the 5th position. The qualifying race was next up and Thiel was placed in the 8th position. After the race went green, Scotty passed several cars and found himself up to 5th in only a few laps. Coming off of turn four, a car hit the wall and bounced into another racer, caused parts to fall onto the racing surface. Thiel dove down to the bottom side of the track to avoid the cars but managed to get into the parts and blew out both right side tires! It was a rough start to the night. Rain came and washed out the remaining portion of the show.
The track decided to run Thursday night's remaining portion before Friday night's qualifer started. Scotty would start 7th in the second B-Main event. The top 2 cars would transfer into that night's A-Main event. After going green, Scotty got into the groove but with a heavy and fast race track, passing became very difficult. Thiel would cross the line in the 7th position and would have to wait and see where he would line up on Saturday's event.
After all of the points were accumulated, Thiel would be placed in the 11th starting postion of the second D-Main. The top 4 cars from each E, D, and C mains would transfer on and top 7 from each B-Main would transfer to the A. The track conditions for Thiel's D-main event were again very heavy and fast. Scotty got a great start and fell into the 7th position coming out of turn two. Thiel was driving the wheels of the car but ran out of time closing in on the top 4 cars. He would end up crossing the line in the 7th position and ending the chance to make it in the final nights 40 lap, $15,000 to win A-Main event.
The results did not show how well Scotty Thiel and the #64 STM Sprint car did over the course of the weekend. The team had a fast race car but needed some luck finishing the races on the Thursday night qualifier. It was a great experience for the entire team and especially Scotty as he drove with the best of the best in winged sprint car racing.
