Empire Super Sprints Make Second of Three Stops Friday Night at Can-Am
The 2024 Golden Jubilee Season heads into the month of August and championship battles are heating up in all divisions. While many are chasing a track title, others are chasing a trip to victory lane still.
Last week in the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modifieds, Billy Dunn collected his second win of the season. The 6 time track champion took the lead from Tyler Meeks with 5 laps to go and held the rest of the way to win for the first time since opening day April 26th. Dunn also gained points on Tim Fuller, who struggled Friday night finishing 8th.
Mike Fowler extended his points lead in the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman division. Fowler picked up his second win of the season after getting by Dustin Hutton late in the race as he marched to victory lane. 4 time track champion Tyler Corcoran suffered mechanical issues in the feature event winding up 15th at the checkered flag. Fowler now holds a 26 point advantage over new second place driver Eric Nier.
The Sundance Leisure Thundercars saw former track champion return to victory lane after several weeks of bad luck. Tony Frezzo marched to his first win in quite some time on Friday night, over opening day winner Lyle Robinson. Damien Bechler crossed in third to put a 22 point cushion between him and Francis White as they continue their battle for the season long championship.
Brady Howard was able to grab the win for a third time this season in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman division. Howard took the lead and never looked back on his way to victory lane. Logan Brown finished second while Genavieve Bartlett completed the podium.
The Panther Frame Worx Crate Sprint Car division has yet another week away from the speedway but it has been clear who the favorite is for the point title. Two-time and defending track champion Josh Verne Jr. is the points leader by 16 points. Andrew Hennessy has been the hottest driver in the region in Crate Sprint action. The Picton native won his 4th of the season a couple weeks back and also grabbed a win at Brockville last Saturday and will look to continue the momentum when the division comes back on August 9th.
This Friday the stars of the Empire Super Sprints will make their way to Can-Am after a pair of events at Outlaw and Woodhull last week. Matt Tanner and Jared Zimbardi took checkered flags last week, however two-time series champion Jordan Poirier leads the way over another former, two-time series champion Jason Barney by 8 points coming into the weekend.
