Tanner Mullens motors to 4th in Mod Wars finale
An extensive schedule of Summit USMTS racing in Minnesota kicked off with the fourth annual Mod Wars at Ogilvie Raceway over the weekend. After early bad luck, Tanner Mullens turned in two top-10 finishes in the three-day event.
The racing action, in which USMTS competitors battle WISSOTA Modified drivers, began on Thursday with a 34-car, $3,000-to-win program at the 3/8-mile Ogilvie track. Mullens drove his Fuqua Trucking No. 02 ride to second in his heat race but blew an engine, forcing his team to go to a backup car.
USMTS rules state that a driver using a backup must either start last in a B-Main or hope for a provisional to move into the main event. Mullens finished eighth in his “B,” but used a provisional to begin the 30-lap feature from the 22nd spot. He climbed an impressive nine positions and registered a 13th-place result.
On Friday, 39 Modifieds descended on Ogilvie for a show with $5,000 going to the winner. Mullens claimed fifth in his heat and won his B-Main, starting him on the seventh row in the feature. He advanced four positions in the 40-lapper and came home 10th.
The next night saw Mullens’ most impressive performance of the weekend as 39 Modified drivers sought an $11,000 winner’s share in the event finale. Mullens again finished fifth in his heat, won his B-Main and started 14th in the main event. This time though he rocketed forward 10 spots in the 50-lap race to finish fourth behind Jake O’Neil, Terry Phillips and Jim Chisholm. Jake Timm rounded out the top five.
Mullens, who sits seventh in the USMTS point standings, also earned the Swift Springs Move of the Race for his Saturday charge.
