Carson McCarl – Fast in First 410 Start!

(Bill W) June 27, 2017 – Carson McCarl had a successful debut in his first 410 sprint car starts last weekend in the Jeremy Scadden Construction #6. Nothing like starting with the best, so it was off to West Liberty Raceway in Iowa with the World of Outlaws Friday. The Altoona, Iowa driver was able to time in fourth quick in the 27-car field before also getting a start Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.

Without the use of a 360, Carson was given the opportunity to run a 410 last weekend. “A lot of people didn’t know it was my first time in a 410,” he says. “I'm really thankful to Jeff and Stacey from Snowplow.com for the opportunity last weekend. I’m disappointed that we don’t have our 360’s, but if we had them, I probably wouldn’t have this opportunity. I’m looking for help to get a 410 again this Saturday at Knoxville. I’d like to put one in the car, so if anyone wants to help, that would be great. I just want to race right now.”

His debut was a good one, when he briefly held the track record at West Liberty before settling for fourth quick. “Friday went well,” says Carson. “I felt really good in qualifying. It was good to go out early and lay down a decent lap. I wasn’t sure where I’d end up, but when we got back to the pits with fourth quick, I was pumped up.”

Carson lined up outside row one for the first heat. “I didn’t know what to think of the track heading into the heat,” he says. “It was heavy getting into the turns, but slick getting off. You had to honk it in, and finesse it at the same time. A few laps in, I was still running second and I was thinking we may make the Dash. It was really cool to battle back and forth slidejobbing with Daryn Pittman and Paul McMahan. To get back by Paul and finish third was pretty cool.”

He would start the feature seventh, but spin in turn two on the first lap. “In these 410’s, you have to slow down more than you think sometimes,” says Carson. “I just went in a little hot and spun it sideways. I was able to get by a couple of guys in the back, but once the track rubbered down, there wasn’t much I could do, so I pulled off.”

Carson made his first 410 start at Knoxville Raceway Saturday. “Knoxville was also a good learning experience on Saturday,” he says. “It was definitely a tricky track. It was slicker than it had been all year and up on the fence. We qualified mid-pack (14th). In the heat, Lynton (Jeffrey) and Brian Brown smoked me on the start. We were able to get by (Scott) Bogucki, made some good laps on the bottom and finished fourth.”

The track rubbered up early in the feature. “We were able to move up a few spots running the bottom,” says Carson. “I didn’t think about moving to the top, and by the time I did, it had already laid rubber. Once I did, I got in line and that was it. I’m hoping for an opportunity to do it all again.”
