Carson McCarl – Pair of Top Five Charges in Wisconsin!

(Bill W) September 9, 2014 – Carson McCarl pulled off a pair of top five finishes in UMSS action last weekend. He roared from 18th to fifth at the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin on Friday, and charged from 10th to fifth at the Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond, Wisconsin on Saturday. Neither came without hard work, as mechanical gremlins plagued the Mastell Brothers Racing #27 team both nights. They will be back in action Thursday at Farley Speedway in Iowa with the Sprint Invaders.

Starting fifth in his heat on Friday at St. Croix, things got interesting early. “We broke a driveshaft on the second lap,” says Carson. “We weren’t the best prepared and it took us a while to get it changed. We weren’t able to make it back out for the Qualifier.”

Without the benefit of passing points, Carson started the feature outside of row nine. “We were really good,” he says. “We got through a lot of the drivers really fast. We didn’t have a whole lot of time to work on the setup. I was just way too loose. At first, I wasn’t too bad, but as the track started to go away, I got free and didn’t have much forward bite.”

Despite the loose conditions, he was able to garner a top five. “We were able to get up to fifth,” says Carson. “We were coming through there well, so that was a good thing.”

The series moved to Cedar Lake on Saturday as part of the Jerry Richert Memorial. It was another DNF in the heat for Carson. “We were leading the heat (after starting second), and having a good battle with the guy running second,” he says. “I was racing hard with him, and he hit my left rear a couple times. I don’t know if that did it, or I ran something over on the track, but we shredded the left rear with about three laps to go.”

He would drive from 11th to fourth in the Qualifier. “We were really fast in the Qualifier,” says Carson. “Unfortunately, right after the checkers, my shifter cable broke, and we didn’t have one long enough to work. The bracket broke off too. That meant, we’d have to go out without a shifter cable. We were in gear once we got pushed off on the track for the feature.”

The pit chaos didn’t allow for changes on the car for the main event. “Unfortunately, we were working on the shifter cable and we only had about fifteen minutes before the feature,” says Carson. “We went out there with the same tires and setup we had had all night. We were able to get up to fifth.”

The race was a challenging one, but Carson would end up with another top five. “One corner was laying rubber and we were super-tight,” he says. “In the other, we were super-loose. It was a weird track and my car was doing some weird stuff, but we were able to get up through there, get by some good cars and get a top five.”
