Carson McCarl – One More Weekend in Cali!

(Bill W) April 10, 2013 – Carson McCarl’s second event in California proved to be a test in taming a tacky, rough, bullring. Driving “Cowboy” Craig Smith’s Taco Bravo #39c Maxim, Carson showed promise in moving into the top five before being involved in an incident on the track. He will compete again this Friday at the same venue, Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, before heading over to Antioch Speedway on Saturday.

A handling issue from week one was addressed with good results. “We had sent the steering pump I had been using the first weekend, and it was completely junk,” says Carson. “It was a lot better this week.”

Carson qualified twelfth quick. “We went out early, and the track was kind of weird,” he says. “We really don’t deal with a tide in Iowa! At Watsonville, they do. It was dry-slick when I went out, but by the end, there was some pretty good moisture. We were about the tenth car out and we set fourth quick. By the end, we were twelfth.”

The Altoona, Iowa driver started on the pole and won his heat going away. “The car was really good in the heat,” says Carson. “It helped to start up front, but we were happy to get the win.”

Carson started 11th in the feature and quickly moved his way forward. “We were really good,” he says. “I was up to fourth in the first five laps or so. I was trying to pass Brad Furr around the high side and I hooked a rut. Three and four were really heavy and rough. You really had to watch where you were going. There were some holes in the middle. I tried to go even higher than he was running and there was a hole up there.”

It was too much to overcome. “We got sideways and someone got in the side of me,” says Carson. “It flattened our left front. It was just a racing deal. There was a red right away, so I was able to get it fixed.”

Carson advanced when the green flew again. “We were good,” he says. “I didn’t know it at the time, but my sway bar and my axle was bent. It was steering a little funny. I still got by five cars, and I thought I was easily going to get a top ten. That’s when I hit another hole and spun out. So I was a victim of the two-spin rule.”

Valuable lap time is being spent on the short track. “You couldn’t really use the bottom,” says Carson. “If there was any way, I would have. I think we honestly had a top three car. I’m going to do the best I can to put it up front this week for Craig and the team.”

Carson is still struggling to find a ride around home. “I’ve got nothing right now back in the Midwest,” he says. “Nothing at all. I’ll do my best to get something put together, but it definitely doesn’t look good right now.”

Carson will return for weekly competition at Watsonville on Friday and he’ll be running at Antioch Speedway on Saturday to complete his California schedule for now.
