Brady Bacon – Busy Weekend at Eldora/Haubstadt!
(Bill W) May 9, 2017 – Brady Bacon will be doing double duty this weekend at Eldora Speedway’s “Let’s Race Two”. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver will be competing in both the Bacon/Marshall Motorsports #99 with the World of Outlaws and the Dooling/Hayward Racing #63 with the USAC National Sprint Series. On Sunday, the Outlaws visit Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, Indiana, where Brady has had three near misses in getting his first WoO win. Last weekend saw him competing with the WoO at the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, and 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kansas.
Brady is looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the Dooling/Hayward #63 at Eldora this weekend. “We ran really well at Kokomo, so we’re looking to build on that,” he says of the non-wing sprinter. “We were able to run second both nights, so we’re excited about that.”
Eldora is a track that he has seen success at both with a wing and without. “We’ve run well at Eldora in the wing car too,” says Brady. “We have some new engine stuff and we’re excited about that too. Unlike some of the places we’ve been lately, we’re familiar with what’s going on. We’re looking forward to that as well. It’s been pretty busy, but it’s one of our chances to win.”
Brady may most be excited about Haubstadt on Sunday. “This is the race I circle on the schedule every year,” he says. “I feel it’s our best shot at a win with the Outlaws. We’ve run second with them there twice, and we were leading once and broke. I think it’s time!”
Last Friday at Sedalia, things started well with the Outlaws when he timed in sixth quick in the 32-car field. “We had been trying some things that had been working most places, but it hasn’t worked as much on the flat tracks like Sedalia,” says Brady. “That amplified our problem. The encouraging part of the night was qualifying well. Our motor program is getting closer.”
After running second in his heat and qualifying for the Dash, Brady would checker 16th in the feature. “It was frustrating to fall back in the feature like that, but it is what it is,” he says. “That’s why we’re running so many of these races, is to iron these things out. We just need to keep getting better. It’s not easy running with these guys.”
It was a bit of a flipflop situation in Wichita on Saturday. Qualifying didn’t go as well, but the car was strong the rest of the night. “I made a mistake at the beginning of the night,” says Brady. “So we had some mechanical issues to start off with in qualifying (16th quick). Once we got that fixed, we were pretty good. But you can’t put yourself in that position to start the night. That’s part of racing with the Outlaws. You can’t make those kinds of mistakes.”
Brady would finish where he started in the feature, thirteenth. “I thought we had a pretty good car,” he says. “It seemed everywhere we were running, someone was there. We didn’t catch too many breaks to get up through there. Racing with a couple of guys cost me some time, but I think we would have been o.k. if we had started towards the front.”
