Brady Bacon – On to PA after Busy Weekend!

(Bill W) September 10, 2015 – Brady Bacon tried to get four races in four different cars in last weekend. He got that accomplished with mixed result. His high was a second place midget run at the Louie Vermeil Classic at Calistoga Speedway in California Saturday. The low was a DNS at the “Ted Horn 100” Sunday at the “Magic Mile” in DuQuoin, Illinois. This Friday and Saturday he’ll tackle the “Tuscarora 50” with the All Stars at Port Royal Speedway in Pennsylvania.

Last Friday, Brady returned to the scene of a MOWA win, the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois in his winged #99. Unfortunately, a 17th place finish was the result. “I’m not real sure what happened there,” he says. “The track was similar to what it was when we won there. We had the car similar too. I couldn’t hardly drive it. When we got home, we found some motor issues. I don’t know what the issue was, but we weren’t happy.”

He hit the friendly skies and pulled double duty driving Josh Ford’s machines in both sprint and midget competition at Calistoga Saturday. “We didn’t get a whole lot of time in the car,” Brady says of the midget. “We had an issue in hot laps where we blew some oil out. We didn’t hardly get any hot laps. Then we had a steering issue in qualifying, so I only got one lap there.”

Still, he qualified eighth quick and won his heat from the fourth starting spot. “By the time the heats came around, we were able to win that,” says Brady. “We started seventh (in the feature). We tried to kind of race Rico (Abreu) to the front. He just got there before we did. I felt we could have had something for him if we were able to get the lead first. Once he’s out front, it’s hard to get around him. It got one lane around the top. It’s tough to beat him and Keith (Kunz) anywhere. We felt good about being competitive.”

He would qualify fifth quick in USAC/CRA competition with the sprint car. He won his heat from the fifth starting spot and started second in the main event. “The outside wasn’t really the place to start,” says Brady. “I fell into line in second, and I was kind of waiting for the track to slow down a little. It was pretty narrow around the top. I got up beside (Richard Vander Weerd) on the bottom, I just could never get by him.”

Brady searched around the racetrack. “I wasn’t expecting it to take rubber, and a couple guys behind me, (Ryan) Bernal and Rico found it,” he says. “They got by me, and then I got by Vander Weerd. We were running third, and I was sliding a lapped car when Damion (Gardner) ran over us. We went to the tail with three or four laps to go and ended up 14th.”

Back in Illinois Sunday at DuQuoin, the night ended almost before it began in the Paul Martens #48 Silver Crown car. “We blew a head gasket,” says Brady. “We only made two or three laps in practice. One of our laps was sixth quick, so I think we would have had a decent shot at it.”

Brady is excited about getting back to central PA this weekend. “We’re looking forward to going to Port Royal,” he says. “Of course, we’ve had some success there without the wing. It rained out the other time we were going to run there with the wing.”
