Shaffer Guides Sides Motorsports to 17th-Place Outing at National Open

Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2019) – Tim Shaffer posted a 17th-place result during the final night of the Champion Racing Oil National Open to highlight the weekend for Sides Motorsports.
Shaffer qualified seventh quickest in his group to kick off the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series action on Friday. However, a DNF in a heat race relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown at Williams Grove Speedway. Shaffer won that race to transfer into the main event, which was short-lived as he pulled off early with a DNF.
“We had a hiccup in the heat race so he had to run the B Main,” team owner Jason Sides said. “He got going in the feature and then got hung out on a restart. He wasn’t making up ground and decided to pull in to save it for the next night.”
Saturday was more consistent for Shaffer as he timed in 12th quickest in his group before he placed fourth in both a heat race and the Last Chance Showdown. That earned a transfer into the A Main. Shaffer rallied from 22nd to the 17th-place finish.
“He got himself in there and got a few cars, but some of the restarts didn’t go his way when one line would go better,” Sides said. “He made a few spots, but he said after the race he was just kind of there.”
Sides was just a tick off in qualifying both nights, timing in 11th quickest in his group on Friday and 16th on Saturday. That put him behind the eight ball in a heat race and his night ended in the Last Chance Showdown both nights.
“I got a really good run in turns one and two to start my heat race on Friday, but a guy got out in the middle and turned right,” he said. “It was either crash or lift. That was my shot from going fourth to second and making the dash to not making the feature. That was kinda how the weekend went overall.”
Sides returns to World of Outlaws competition this Saturday at Terre Haute Action Track in Terre Haute, Ind., during the Wabash Clash and Sunday at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.
“It’s only a one-car operation this week,” he said. “I know we can run decent in Haubstadt. Terre Haute is more about qualifying because the track is so big. Hopefully we’ll put it in the show and move forward each night.”
