Inside Line Promotions – OWASSO, Okla. (Nov. 20, 2017) – Tony Bruce Jr. produced a successful season despite limited racing action.
Bruce Jr., who piloted the Smith Family No. 86 winged sprint car, scored one feature victory, five podiums, 11 top fives and 18 top 10s in 27 races.
“We didn’t end up with as many races as we thought and that makes it tough to show up to events against drivers who have a lot more seat time,” he said. “We did a good job of adapting quickly and putting ourselves in a good position.”
The highlight of the season came on Sept. 30 when Bruce Jr. scored his lone victory of the season during an ASCS Mid-South Region show at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.
“The car was phenomenal and I could do whatever I needed to get to the front and then through traffic,” he said. “Those nights are hard to come by so you definitely savor them whenever the opportunity is presented.”
An additional highlight also came at I-30 Speedway during the famed Short Track Nationals in October. Bruce Jr. made a last-lap pass during the opening preliminary night to score a podium finish and lock into the Saturday finale. He then ended the prestigious event with a fifth-place finish out of 70-plus competitors.
In addition to the two podiums at I-30 Speedway, Bruce Jr. netted two podiums at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo., and he added a top three at Double X Speedway in California, Mo.
Also, Bruce Jr. placed fourth in the ASCS Warrior Region championship standings thanks to seven top fives and 10 top 10s despite not attending many races.
“I want to thank everyone who is a part of the Smith Family No. 86 for the opportunity and their support,” he said. “We had a fun season and I’m looking forward to what next year holds.
“Also, thank you to Mike Hayashi for having me race a few times with him. We had a good time.”
