Minnesota Missile Monday: Sparks Claims First Career Feature in Micro

A late decision by the team to make the pull up to The New Raceway Park outside of Jefferson, SD was a memorable night. Wanting to support micro racing in the area, the class was small but mighty as the three drivers in the winged restricted class put on a fun show.
Heat:
KC Sparks drew the pole position for the heat race and after a quick gear change after hot laps, he paced the field to the green. Sparks quickly jumped to the lead while Taver West and Kyler Bearce raced side by side for the runner up position. Their battle allowed Sparks to pull ahead and hold on for his first heat race win in a micro. West was second with Bearce third.
Feature:
The feature was lined up with West on the pole with Sparks to the outside and Bearce in the second row. On the start, West got the jump on Sparks and took the lead down the front stretch. West maintained a half-second lead over Sparks for most of the event with Sparks having the better drive in turns one and two while West would maintain his lead through three and four.
On the white flag lap, it appeared as if West would claim the win in his second micro event after leading all eleven circuits up to the white flying. Sparks was only three-tenth behind at the line but held the bottom out of turn two and pulled alongside West as the duo entered turn three. Sparks drove hard to the bottom of turn three to edge ahead of West. They touched and Sparks pulled ahead out of turn four to claim his first feature win.
After the race, Sparks said, “This was for Nana!” Sparks had learned just five minutes before the feature that his grandma had just passed away after a battle with dementia and was free from the disease. She was able to cheer him on from heaven.
