Brandon Wimmer – Thundering Through the Plains!

(Bill W) July 28, 2010 – Brandon Wimmer and car owner Rick Ferkel are ready to head West with the #0 for some action with the All Star Circuit of Champions and the “Thunder Through the Plains”. The Fairmount, Indiana driver is coming off a successful Friday night, as an entertaining feature battle resulted in a fourth place run.

It was a night of “firsts” at Attica Raceway Park last Friday night when the car owner decided to draw for a starting spot in the heat race. “Rick had never drawn before while I’ve been running with him, and that includes that last three years off and on,” says Brandon. “I had been drawing so bad, that he got sick of it. Our other helper wouldn’t do it either, because he had been drawing badly too. Rick actually drew a 12. That was pretty funny.”

Brandon would finish second in his heat race. In the main event, he ran in the top three for much of the way. A five-car battle at the front saw him checker fourth. “We got to start up front and we finished second in the heat, which put us in the redraw (starting fifth),” he says. “The top five were running together. You could have thrown a blanket on us. It was a really good race.”

The “Thunder Through the Plains gets underway this weekend. The All Stars will travel to the Red River Valley Speedway in Fargo, North Dakota on Thursday. The track was shortened by new promoter Danny Schatz. “I’m looking forward to it,” says Brandon. “We have a new car put together to run out West. With Danny Schatz shortening Fargo, it’s going to be a whole new ballgame for me there. To be honest, we were thinking about not going if it was the old configuration (1/2 mile).”

Three big nights of racing will be next at the Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Brandon ran well at the 1/3 mile oval when the All Stars visited Huset’s last year, though on the first night a breakage sent him into the wall. He would finish seventh in the finale at Huset’s on a heavy racetrack. “We raced our way up to about sixth,” he says of the first night. “It was pretty rough. We got into the cushion in turn one and the right rear wheel hub broke. That sent us right into the wall. At that point, I was just along for the ride.”

The tour heads South after Sunday’s events in South Dakota. “I’m really looking forward to the trip,” says Brandon. “We haven’t had a chance to race in that area this year, and we go good at several of those tracks.”
