Brian Brown – Three Big Tests This Week!

(Bill W) June 23, 2014 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team took another step towards the Knoxville Nationals last Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway with a solid third place finish. This weekend, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver has three events on tap, including two with the Outlaws. On Friday, 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa will host the WoO. After another weekly show Saturday at Knoxville, Brian will be back with the Outlaws at Cedar Lake Speedway near Somerset, Wisconsin on Sunday. The race will be sponsored by FVP.

There were only eighteen track championships and 182 wins on the track when you qualified with Danny Lasoski and Terry McCarl Saturday night at Knoxville.

It kind of lets you know where you are at for the night! I don’t know that there’s been a trio qualify together like that with that many wins and championships at Knoxville. It was cool to be out there with two guys like that, and it was neat to get the best time in the group (3rd quick).

You were able to go from sixth to second in the heat. I know that is important for you headed towards August.

That’s one of our main focuses. We feel starting sixth, we need to get to first or second to be where we need to be at Nationals where you need to come from eighth to fourth. It’s a process we work to get better at every week. That was good to be in the hunt for the heat win on Saturday.

You lined up sixth for the feature, but it seemed it took a while for you to get going.

The first five or eight laps, I felt like I lost my map. I didn’t run very good laps. I felt like I was on the wrong part of the track. I kind of got settled back in there, and started running a little better in the middle of the race.

About halfway, you reeled in the top three.

I was able to get to fourth, and I saw (Justin) Henderson and Danny (Lasoski). They were running the bottom and I had been running the top. I honestly thought that race was for the lead. I kind of maintained there a little knowing that we were running 25 laps. I figured at lap 16 or 18, we’d get after it. I looked at the scoreboard with six or seven to go, and saw that #7 (Craig Dollansky) was leading. I didn’t even see him, so I figured I needed to go. I wasn’t going to be able to catch him without a caution, so I needed to go for second.

It was a heck of a race between you and Danny the last few laps for third.

I got around Danny with about two to go. I jumped the cushion and let him back by. If that hadn’t had happened, I think I could have gotten Henderson too. They were still on the bottom, and I think at that point, the track was better on top. I was kind of kicking myself a bit for not going up there sooner and trying it. I don’t think we would have caught Dollansky, but I think we could have been second.

Still, it was a strong third place run, and you were getting faster as the race went on.

Overall, I’m nitpicking things that could have been better. It’s not often where you get two nights at Knoxville that go non-stop. Sometimes, you have a shot at second. I don’t know if Dollansky was faster, but he had the clean air out front. According to times, we were equal. He did his job, and we’ll keep plugging at it and try to get another win.

There are three big races this weekend that should be fun!

We’re looking forward to Burlington with the Outlaws. We’ve had some success there in the past. Obviously, we’re back in Knoxville Saturday, and then FVP is a presenting sponsor for the Outlaws in Cedar Lake on Sunday. I’m looking forward to visiting with their employees and customers up there. It’s just an hour and a half from their corporate headquarters. We almost won there a couple of years ago until I put it in the fence, so we want to do well for them. We’re looking for three solid nights where we’re in contention to win.
