Brian Brown – Busy Week Ahead Follows King’s Royal!

(Bill W) July 15, 2013 – Four nights of racing loom for Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team this week. After running the King’s Royal in Ohio last weekend, it will be a mix of 360 and 410 racing Wednesday through Saturday in the Upper Midwest.

At the “Knight Before the King’s Royal” Friday at Eldora, you qualified ninth quick.

We went out a little early, and actually, I think the track got better as it went. If you’re not first or second quick, ninth through sixteenth is where you need to be. We definitely laid down a good lap.

You were able to win your heat from outside row one.

They reworked the racetrack before the heats. We were in the first heat, so I didn’t really know what to expect. We were able to get by Danny Holtgraver in two and kind of set sail.

How did the Dash go? You started fifth.

We had a pretty good run going, and got to third in turn two. We didn’t get a good run off of two, and we kind of missed it. We fell back to sixth.

You started outside of row three for the feature.

We ran seventh through tenth really the whole feature. We got going a little later and charged back forward. On the last lap, we passed Paul McMahan and Craig Dollansky. Coming to the checkered, the flagman had a miscue and somehow the yellow got thrown. We finished eighth, but they went to the last completed lap where we were tenth. Overall, it wasn’t a bad night. There’s a big difference when you’re in your own air, or behind two or three cars.

Obviously, you went out for a shot at the King’s Royal on Saturday. Things started well by qualifying sixth quick.

The only thing qualifying does at the King’s Royal is set up your heat races. They invert twenty-four. We started fourth in the heat, and I really felt we had a good shot to win. The front row was playing games on the start and didn’t really get going. I just didn’t get a good start and I was fourth in turn two. I had a car get sideways in front of me. We just didn’t get the start we needed, and you need to have a good start at Eldora. We were happy at that point just to get third and get locked in.

With the format, you started 18th. You would finish 17th.

We just really weren’t good enough. We were alright, just not good enough to pass cars. We weren’t able to move around like we needed to.

I know you had high expectations going in.

It was a little disappointing, because we had been good there early in the year. To not do what we thought we could was disappointing, but the sun still came up on Sunday morning and we’ve got some big races coming up. We’ll keep our head up and keep plugging away.

I know you have some 360 races planned with JSTS Speedweek.

We’ll be at Sioux Center (Iowa) on Wednesday. I’m not sure if it will be Rock Rapids (Iowa) or I-80 (Speedway in Nebraska) on Thursday, Fairmont (Minnesota) Friday and double duty at Knoxville on Saturday. Four nights of racing will be a good way to shake off a race that you thought you should have done better at. You can’t get too high or too low, you have to just keep an even keel.
