Brian Brown – Frequent Flier!
(Bill W) April 1, 2013 – It was a busy weekend for the Brian Brown Racing Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21. They traveled time zones to run eighth on Friday night with the World of Outlaws in Merced, California and with the NCRA on Saturday in Wichita, Kansas. This weekend, they plan on hitting California WoO stops in Antioch and Calistoga.
You did well to qualify in the invert again at Merced on Friday.
Merced is obviously one of the smallest tracks the Outlaws go to. We made some changes to our car to get better on these little bullrings. The guys’ hard work definitely paid off. We drew a good number, which helped our qualifying. I didn’t cut two very good laps. Luckily, it held on for twelfth quick.
You did well in your heat.
The car felt as good as it has on a small track all night long. We won the heat, and our lap times were right there with the other guys who won their heats.
That put you in the Dash.
We were able to go from tenth to eighth. We may have been the only car to pass someone.
How did your eighth place run in the feature go?
We didn’t start too well. I think we dropped back to tenth, and we ended up getting by a couple cars halfway through. We ended up eighth, so overall it was a pretty good night.
How do you feel about your trip with the WoO to California at this juncture?
We’ve had a good car. We just haven’t had the results for whatever reason the last couple of weeks. To get a top ten at a place we haven’t seen was a good result.
You had a unique opportunity to fly back for the NCRA show at Wichita.
We were able to team up with Ty Williams out of Liberal, Kansas. He had a Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 waiting for us in Wichita on Saturday night. He was able to put all our partners on there. He was nice enough to do that for us.
You went from sixth to fourth in your heat race.
There wasn’t a lot of passing. They obviously got a lot of rain the night before, and it was watered quite a bit too. The track kept getting faster as the night went on.
That lined you up starting 14th in the main event.
We made some progress. I think we were up to eighth or ninth at one point. We had to kind of kamikaze on the top and hope you didn’t jump someone’s right rear. We made some pretty brave decisions for not going anywhere. I pulled it in and we called it a night.
You had a lot of people helping you make it happen.
I have to thank Ty for letting us run the car. Chad Morgan came back with me, and TJ, Paul Flynn and Greg were there too. We just didn’t get the result we wanted.
So Friday you will be running Antioch and Saturday, you’ll be at Calistoga.
They say Antioch is really small. It should be exciting. I’m looking forward to getting there. We’ve made some changes I think will help us. We’ve had Calistoga circled on the calendar. It’s a half-mile that we are most used to.
