Brian Brown – Short Track Nationals Looms This Weekend!

(Bill W) October 24, 2011 – This weekend, Brian Brown and the FVP #21 team are seeking a win at the Short Track Nationals at the I-30 Speedway near Little Rock, Arkansas. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver has finished second and third in the past at the prestigious event, and hopes to be atop the podium this Saturday night.

Last weekend found the team running Devil’s Bowl Speedway near Mesquite, Texas with the Lucal Oil ASCS National Series. In Friday’s prelim, a slick track yielded a fourth place heat run. “We drew badly, but we got a break when one of the cars in front of us didn’t start in the heat,” says Brian. “That put us outside row three. The track was pretty slimy and about two seconds off the pace. There just wasn’t much passing. We were able to get to fourth and pass Travis Rilat and finish in front of Shane Stewart, but we weren’t anywhere close to where we needed to be.”

Brian was able to transfer to the main event through the B. “It was hard to get a hold of the track,” he says. “We started on the pole of the B, and we were able to run second.”

Starting 22nd on the fast track, Brian would pull off early. “I think at one point we were fifteenth or sixteenth, but then we were stuck behind Johnny Herrera and Jason Johnson,” he says. “We just ran about three-quarters of the race and pulled off. I was glad we had our Racing Optics tear-offs. I think I went out with 40 tear-offs and I had six or seven left. In the old days, we would have been in trouble.”

Saturday’s finale saw a much different track. Brian won his heat from outside row one. “Lanny (Edwards) and Emmett (Hahn) worked really hard to get the track better,” he says. “We drew a better number for the heat and we were able to win that. We had a good car all night really. It was the best car we had in a while.”

The FVP #21 team went to work to get the car ready for the feature. “Unfortunately for our points, there was plenty of passing in the heats and that put us starting ninth in the feature,” says Brian. “We got up to sixth in the first few laps. I was passing a guy for fifth, and he got crossed up. When I went wide, Shane Stewart and Brady Bacon got by. I didn’t make the best decision and I didn’t know where the car was going.

Brian would work his way back to sixth, but by then the passing was over. “It laid rubber, and we got in line,” he says. “It made for hard work, and the guys really worked hard. For the conditions, we’ll take sixth and move on to Little Rock.”

The Short Track Nationals get underway with prelims Thursday and Friday that precede Saturday’s finale. “Usually short tracks aren’t my favorite, but this is one of my top two or three favorite tracks,” says Brian of the ¼-mile oval. “It’s a great event. Tracey Clay and her whole team put on a great show. It’s usually great racing. There are almost always lanes to race. With the format, you better start passing cars right away, and get used to it.”

Brian's Q&A

Nick Ryman asks: The track is different in Little Rock every time you hit the track. How many adjustments do you make on a typical night there?

Brian answers: We don’t really make too many. I’ve kind of been going with the same setup the last five or six years. We don’t change too much. It gets tricky. It’s a red clay that can get shined off and be tough to get a hold of. You have to have your car working really well. I think our “Big Max” Maxim is suited well to it, and I think our team is put together really well right now. I like our chances.
